LSU's Les Miles: It's Time To Admit That He's a Rock Star
Les Miles, the ever eccentric head coach of the LSU Tigers, has been ridiculed, questioned and constantly reminded that he is not his predecessor. His ridiculous winning record, 62-17, his SEC championship and even his national championship have not quieted his critics.
Yet there is something brewing on the bayou this season. This something, aided by a defense that just may be the best seen in this writer's lifetime, is forcing Les Miles into a status not seen since The Ole Ball Coach Steve Spurrier's heyday in the Swamp: that of a rock star.
SI's Andy Staples has likened Miles to A Beautiful Mind leading character John Nash. Staples went on to write that "Like Nash, Les Miles operates on a higher plane than most of us. Don't try to understand just sit back and enjoy."
ESPN's Scott Van Pelt has gone on record many times adhering to his love of Les Miles on his popular afternoon radio show. Of course there is the sensational YouTube video involving Van Pelt's special shoes given to Miles and a coach who will proudly state that "This is my house," even to his darling little girl.
The fact is, the college football-loving world absolutely loves Les Miles. They love him for his blunders. They love him for his Mad Hatter persona. They love him for his seeming inability to control a game clock. Most of all, they love him for his complete ability to laugh at himself.
It is officially time for all of LSU nation to do the same. All Les Miles has done is win. In the process he has stocked LSU with talent, so much though that even with the loss of All-Americans, LSU doesn't even blink while reloading. The culmination of his work is quickly becoming ever present in the fact that LSU will be an undeniable force for years to come.
Bar fights, starting quarterback suspensions and NCAA sanctions can't even stop Les Miles and his Bayou Bengals. The Mick Jagger of college football does nothing but produce a team that suffocates each of it's victims into submission.
In a call to arms to all the Tiger Faithful, enjoy it. The Mad Hatter will utterly confuse you. He will make you grind your teeth, but that is the genius of it all. Les Miles, before his tenure is up, will be forever etched in LSU lore. It is time for all of Tiger Nation to simply enjoy the ride.
