Michigan Football: 5 Reasons the Wolverines Can Go Undefeated

Austin FoxJun 4, 2018

Michigan currently sits at 3-0 and has a good chance of being 6-0 heading into the Michigan State game on Oct. 15.

They would first have to get by San Diego State this weekend and a tough road test to Northwestern on Oct. 8.  However, the Wildcats probably aren't as good as people originally thought, seeing as how they lost to Army this weekend.

If Michigan does start 6-0, anything could happen from there.

Now nobody is saying Michigan will go undefeated this year, but here are five reasons they potentially could.

5. Greg Mattison

1 of 5

The Michigan defense hasn't even scratched the surface of how good it can be under Greg Mattison.

They have shown flashes of brilliance at times, but have also resembled last year's defense at times as well.

With players such as Cam Gordon and Brandon Herron soon returning from injury, this defense will only get better and better.

By the time Big Ten play starts, they will be an experienced and hopefully solid group.

They still have a ways to go, but again, it's a long season and have time for improvement.

By the time November rolls along, Mattison will have these kids playing good enough defense to beat anybody on their schedule.

4. The Schedule Sets Up Favorably

Some people will disagree strongly with this one, but the fact that Michigan plays only four road games helps tremendously.

When looking at the road tests, Northwestern and Iowa are beginning to look like easier games than people originally thought, and even though Illinois is looking good so far, it's still a winnable game.

The toughest road test will be Michigan State, but chances are that Brady Hoke and the rest of these players will do whatever it takes to win that game.

When looking at the home slate, Michigan has the ability to win any of those games.

Nebraska looks like the toughest home test, but Michigan can still certainly beat them.

3. No Wisconsin

3 of 5

Not having Wisconsin on the schedule helps Michigan immensely.

Wisconsin is clearly the best team in the Big Ten, as it is extremely hard to even find a weakness on their team.  Wide receiver looked like one coming into the season, but Nick Toon has stepped up in a big way so far.

Their defense is very solid, but not necessarily great.  We'll see how much the loss of Devin Smith affects the secondary.

It would be very surprising if Wisconsin doesn't win the Leaders Division.  In fact, it would be somewhat of a surprise if they don't win the entire Big Ten, seeing as how they look a lot better than any team in the Legends Division.

Michigan does not play Wisconsin in the regular season, but we'll see if the two meet in the Big Ten championship.

2. Brady Hoke

4 of 5

Brady Hoke hasn't lost a game in his Michigan head coaching career, and doesn't plan to lose one any time soon.  It'll be interesting to see how long Michigan can keep this undefeated streak going.

Hoke wants nothing more than for Michigan to be victorious, and so far that's been a big reason why they haven't lost a game.

The team has looked sloppy at times, and downright bad at others, but because of Hoke they always find a way to win.

This team doesn't have the talent quite yet to contend for national titles, but Hoke will have this team doing better than most "experts" around the country originally thought.

1. Denard Robinson

5 of 5

Denard Robinson just always seems to find a way to get the job done.  Although not always pretty, he has led his team to a 3-0 start so far.

If this Michigan team is going to go places this year, it will all start with Denard Robinson.  He is simply the key to this team.

If he's not successful, the team likely won't be either.  But if he is, this team can beat almost anybody.

Denard has proven in the past what can happen when he has a monster game.
