NFL: 20 Questions To Answer After Week 2
The only things you can be sure of in the NFL is that Tom Brady is the currently the game's best player and that there is way too much unpredictability amongst the 32 teams.
While some teams took a nose dive this past weekend (Jaguars, Baltimore), some surprised us with their performance (Tennessee, Pittsburgh).
Others, well there is no telling what will happen (Kansas City, Colts). All I know is that because of the lockout and the lack of time for cohesion, the NFL looks to be as even as it has been in some time.
And for the fans, that is a good thing.
Here are 20 questions that can be answered as of now about America's favorite sport.
20. Who Will Be the First Coach to Be Fired This Season?
1 of 20That probably comes down to the Chiefs' Todd Haley and the Jaguars' Jack Del Rio.
Haley has been on the hot seat since the team lost its playoff game last season.
Del Rio has been there for two seasons.
Both have teams that look like they are headed for disaster. My gut feeling is Haley goes first and Del Rio toughs it out for the season.
19. Will the Green Bay Defense Finally Stop Someone?
2 of 20The Packers gave up 34 points to the Saints and 23 points to the Panthers.
Something has to give.
The Packers are better than that. The offense is explosive, but I am sure head coach Mike McCarthy does not want to have a shootout every time the team plays.
18. Are the Redskins for Real?
3 of 20"In Rex We Trust." Rex Grossman may be the biggest surprise in the NFC this year so far.
He has played within himself and has looked like a true NFL starting quarterback.
The team has played well in its first two games. When they play stiffer competition (Philadelphia, Dallas), we will gauge how good they will be.
17. Will We See More of Tim Tebow at Wide Receiver?
4 of 20Maybe.
Head coach John Fox said he wanted to keep Tebow fresh in practice and with the team's issues at receiver, this may be a great move for the second-year pro.
I can only imagine Orton to Tebow for six points and how the crowds at Mile High Stadium will react.
16. Is Pittsburgh Back Amongst the NFL Elite?
5 of 20Not yet. But a 24-0 win sure helps things out.
The Steelers defense is getting a little older and they looked it the first game of the season.
Then Seattle appeared on the schedule and all was well.
The Steelers will need to put together a game like they played against a tougher opponent to figure out where they truly stand.
15. Is Kenny Britt That Good a Receiver?
6 of 20It sure looks that way, doesn't it?
Matt Hasselbeck and Britt have something special building in Tennessee.
The second-year receiver has had two consecutive 100-yard receiving games.
His speed and size is a mismatch for secondaries.
14. Are the Buffalo Bills for Real?
7 of 20I would like to think this team can get back to its glory days.
The offense looks as good as any team in the NFL. But giving up 35 points to Oakland is a little worrisome.
Let's see how they do against their division rivals first.
13. Did the Jaguars Hurt Themselves by Releasing David Garrard?
8 of 20Boy, it sure looks that way.
Luke McCown had an awful game against the New York Jets after he was a good clock manager against the Titans.
The Jaguars offense has been tagged as "boring," which is something head coach Jack Del Rio is fine with.
If the quarterback play does not get better, and it looks like rookie Blaine Gabbert will start very soon, dropping the team's starter since 2007 looks to be a costly move.
12. Is Houston as Good as They Seem to Be?
9 of 20With the way things are in the AFC South, Houston is the cream of the crop.
Matt Schaub to Andre Johnson looks to remain a top tandem.
The defense is much improved under Wade Phillips.
This is a team that can make some noise in the playoffs.
11. What Happens If Michael Vick Is out for an Extended Period of Time?
10 of 20It means the Eagles' chances of going to the Super Bowl may fade away.
I like what they did in free agency, but with Vick out of the picture against Atlanta, the team blew a 10-point lead.
Vick makes the offense go and although there are great weapons to choose from, it is Vick that sets the odometer for the team.
With Vick out, even with a better defense or a strong running game, this team loses a lot more than just the quarterback.
10. Should the Colts Make a Run at Carson Palmer?
11 of 20They need to do something.
Obviously, Kerry Collins is not working out for the Colts.
Palmer does not want to play in Cincinnati and he has not filed retirement papers yet.
If he goes to Indianapolis, they have a chance to be decent this season.
9. How Good Is Darren McFadden?
12 of 20Very good.
He can run with the best of them and can catch the ball in a Marshall Faulk-type role.
The Raiders have a chance to be decent this year, and the running game is one of the reasons.
Look for McFadden to have great numbers this season.
8. Will We See Christian Ponder Any Time Soon?
13 of 20Donovan McNabb threw for 228 yards in a loss in which the Vikings were up 17-0 at halftime.
Ponder will sit on the bench and learn. But like in Jacksonville's case, how long will it be before the coaching staff lets the rookie have a crack at the starting job?
7. Is Detroit Playoff Bound?
14 of 20That question is too early to answer. But they look good after two weeks.
Matthew Stafford looks to be fully healed and the team as a whole looks like it is ready to make a real challenge toward the NFC North title.
If everything falls into place, this team can win 10 games.
6. How Good Are the Jets?
15 of 20Two games. Two wins.
A come-from-behind win against the Cowboys and a romp over the Jaguars.
Head coach Rex Ryan is probably the happiest head coach in the NFL right now.
Mark Sanchez looks good at the start of the season and his secondary is playing like it's the best in the conference.
And yes, they may get back to the AFC title game again...only this time they may win it.
5. Is Cam Newton the Next Big Thing in the NFL?
16 of 20I don't know that yet, but I will say over 800 yards passing in his first two games isn't all that bad.
I am not a Newton fan, but I am a fan of his ability.
He is better than he was advertised when he drafted, so let's see what happens.
I do know he will be better than Vince Young and Steve McNair. Better than Michael Vick remains to be seen.
4. What Does Tony Romo's Injury Mean to the Cowboys?
17 of 20A cracked rib and a punctured lung.
OUCH!
Head coach Jason Garrett said on Monday that he did not rule out the chance that Romo would play next Monday night against the Redskins.
A report from www.espn.com stated the Cowboys sent out a release later Monday that said Romo has evidence of a pneumothorax, which is a collection of air or gas in the space around the lungs. It can be the result of a puncture caused by trauma such as a rib fracture.
A source said the puncture was "very small."
Even so, if Romo is out for an extended period of time, the likelihood of the Cowboys making the postseason are slim.
3. Who Is the Best Team in the NFL?
18 of 20Until they are beaten, I am going with New England.
It wasn't that Miami played so poorly in the Monday night opener as much as it was the Patriots were that much better.
San Diego is a good team, and they were beaten by by 14 points.
Like I said, show me a loss and then we can talk about others.
2. Should We Give Tom Brady the MVP Already?
19 of 20Not yet, but...
Brady is the fine wine of the NFL. And that is the best compliment i can give him.
He just makes it work.
He has thrown for over 900 yards in his first two games and could eclipse Dan Marino's mark of 5,084 passing yards if he keeps this up.
It would be tough, but who knows.
1. Are You Keeping Your Super Bowl Prediction?
20 of 20Yes, Patriots and Saints in Indianapolis.
