Rams vs. Giants Monday Night Football: 3 Rookies To Watch

Chris TrapassoSep 19, 2011

The Rams and the Giants take center stage on Monday Night Football this evening, two teams that have endured a great deal of injuries only two weeks into the season.

Because of these injuries, there is a handful of rookies you must keep your eye on in this one.

Sam Bradford is always worth watching and all eyes will be on Eli Manning as he tries to avoid a nightmarish 0-2.

For the Rams, Bradford must rely on a few first-year players to fill the void left by Danny Amendola and possibly Steven Jackson.

The Giants are far more decimated with injuries and have rookies in a few crucial positions on defense.

Let's take a look...

Greg Salas

1 of 3

Salas, the fourth-round pick out of Hawaii was held to only one catch against the Eagles, but he may be targeted to fill Danny Amendola's role in the slot.

Salas was extremely productive in a wide-open system during his college career and is shifty enough to beat linebackers in coverage.

I don't think he'll be targeted as much as Amendola was last season, but with the injury, he is forced into that No. 3 wide receiver spot.

I like Salas' skill set and hands and the Rams should try to spread out the Giants defense, giving him room across the middle.

Jerrell Jernigan

2 of 3

He was held without a catch in Week 1, but with Hakeem Nicks questionable, we could see the Troy standout tonight against the Rams.

Jernigan is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball and could be used on the occasional bubble screen or in the slot.

Victor Cruz likely will enter the game before Jernigan does, but if the Giants go to any four- and five-receiver sets, look for Jernigan out there.

Not much is known about the third-round pick, and he has a chance to emerge under the bright lights of Monday Night Football this evening.

Greg Jones

3 of 3

Jones was a tackling machine and a great leader during his four-year career at Michigan State.

At 6'0'', 242 pounds, he was labeled by many coaches and scouts to be too small to play middle linebacker in the NFL

But there aren't many rookie linebackers with a better football IQ than Jones, and he'll start tonight alongside veterans Mathias Kiwanuka and Michael Boley.

He has learned a lot from Boley since training camp and it'll be interesting to see if he can prove the doubters wrong this evening.

Jones had four solo tackles last week against the Redskins and it's likely to take him a few games to transition to the faster NFL with more complex offensive attacks.
