BCS Rankings: 3 Teams Playing Themselves out of BCS Contention

Matt FaulconerSep 19, 2011

The BCS rankings are still a few weeks away from being released, but there are plenty of teams who are playing themselves out of the BCS already.

While Oklahoma and LSU are impressing the countries, teams like Notre Dame are letting their fans down.

Here are three teams who have already started playing themselves out of the BCS:

Notre Dame

The most disappointing team in the country so far has to be the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. They are absolutely dismantling opposing defenses, yet they can't seem to hold onto the ball.

With Tommy Rees leading the way for the Irish offense, they have moved the ball very well, but the turnovers have not stopped.

The team is averaging 289 passing yards per game as well as 143 rushing yards per game.

Unfortunately for Irish fans, they have lost two games because of their turnover issues.

They were a potential BCS team to start the year, but that is no longer the case.

Virginia Tech

The Hokies are still undefeated, but they are far from impressive so far this year. Their 17-10 victory over East Carolina had Tech fans on the edge of their seats for the entire game, and likely brought back memories of the team's loss to James Madison last year.

New quarterback Logan Thomas has been awful this year and doesn't exactly inspire confidence at this point. He is 38-of-72 for just 530 yards against inferior opponents.

This team has a matchup coming up with Clemson, and it doesn't seem like there is any chance they will take the ACC Championship from Florida State this year.

TCU

The Horned Frogs found a way to sneak into the BCS last year and could have made it happen again this year, but they lost their season opener against Baylor.

Had they remained undefeated until the end of the year and knocked off Boise State, they would likely appeared in their second straight BCS game.

However, they are all but out of contention for a BCS bid after the loss to Baylor.
