Heisman Trophy Odds: Stanford QB Andrew Luck Favored Heading into Week 4

Jeff GrantSep 19, 2011

The 2011 Heisman Trophy race will start to gain more media attention heading into Week 4 as candidates start getting into the middle of their conference schedules.

Bookmakers are starting to establish front runners from the rest of the pack, as four players are currently listed at +1000 or lower in the betting odds.

All future wagers are based on the premise of bettors wagering $100, which would ultimately result in a $1,000 winning ticket using the odds (+1000) above.

Let's take a look at the four favorites to take home the award this December in New York City.

Marcus Lattimore (+1000)

1 of 4

South Carolina Gamecocks sophomore running back Marcus Lattimore is starting to get cranked up, increasing his rushing output in each successive week.

Lattimore followed up his 174-yard road performance against the Georgia Bulldogs with 245 rushing yards against Navy.

Head coach Steve Spurrier isn't going to trust quarterback Stephen Garcia in key points of SEC games moving forward, which gives the Duncan, SC native a great chance to end up in the Big Apple.

Denard Robinson (+800)

2 of 4

Michigan Wolverines quarterback Denard Robinson was last year's betting favorite at this point of the season, as he gained 1,204 total yards in the first three weeks.

The junior has fallen off that pace a bit in a more pro-style offense under first-year head coach Brady Hoke, coming into this week with 531 passing and 334 rushing yards.

Not out of the question if the Wolverines continue winning, but we've seen this type of start before in Ann Arbor.

Russell Wilson (+800)

3 of 4

The No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers received an early Christmas gift when quarterback Russell Wilson transferred to Madison from NC State.

He has been spectacular in all three starts this year, and the Badgers have outscored opponents by an incredible 135-24 margin.

The senior's entire campaign is likely to hinge on his performance against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Oct. 1 at Camp Randall Stadium.

Luckily for bettors, Nebraska's defense hasn't looked very intimidating, surrendering 67 combined points in the last two weeks to Fresno State and Washington.

Best value at this point of the season.

Andrew Luck (+300)

4 of 4

Stanford Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck has a lot going for him, especially in terms of being the favorite to take home the Heisman Trophy this December.

The voters love having the award attached to No. 1 picks in the NFL draft.  It's happened three times in the past nine years with Carson Palmer, Sam Bradford and Cam Newton.

The junior signal-caller is also starting to find his groove by passing for more yardage each week, coming off a 20-of-31 performance for 325 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-10 road win over the Arizona Wildcats.

Favored for many reasons, including public perception.
