Michigan Football: Denard Robinson Is the Round Peg in a "Square Hole" Offense
For University of Michigan starting quarterback Denard Robinson, amazing athletic performances have been nothing out of the ordinary.
But amazing athletic performances and amazing quarterback performances are hardly in the same neighborhood when it comes to leading a team to long-term success.
Michigan's new offensive coordinator, Al Borges, has tried to keep as much of Michigan's former spread offense as he can while still installing a new pro-style offense.
But, in the end, Michigan's inability to generate consistent passing yardage—not talking about total passing yardage, only consistent passing yardage—will be the downfall of this team this year.
We have seen it in previous seasons under Rich Rodriguez; but that time it was the inability to run to set up the pass.
This time, Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson seems to be unable to pass to set up the run.
When Brady Hoke came to Michigan, there was an expectancy to see a significant increase in the power running game at Michigan.
While this has been the case, Robinson's passing numbers have dropped inexplicably.
In the month of September, Robinson is 27-55 passing, good for 531 yards.
He also has six touchdowns, and four interceptions.
It becomes even more worrisome when one takes into account that 200 yards of his season total came in the fourth quarter against Notre Dame.
One might defend Robinson by saying that he shows up when he needs to show up, but Robinson went 7-18 against Eastern Michigan last week; racking up less than 100 yards passing.
A 38.9 completion percentage?
Against Eastern Michigan University?
He can't control the drops by his receivers, but some of his passes have been overthrown or forced into a window that the defense had shut before Robinson released the ball.
Michigan may very well go into Week 7 against Michigan State sitting at 6-0, as they only have to play Northwestern, San Diego State University and Minnesota before they meet the Spartans in East Lansing.
But, mark my words, sooner rather than later, the "round peg" in Denard Robinson, will not be able to fit into the square-holed offense of Al Borges.
I could end up being very wrong, but unless Michigan's defense can sustain the effort they gave last week against Eastern Michigan, I don't see this team finishing higher than 9-3.
