Top 50 Most Important Things We Learned From the NFL's Week 2
Was Week 2 of the NFL season even more exciting than Week 1? I think so.
Week 2 featured a few upsets, a few dominant victories and several story-lines that were very entertaining. All in all, the 2011 season is shaping up to be one for the ages.
With that being said, here are the top 50 most important things that we've learned from Week 2.
The Buffalo Bills Look for Real
1 of 50The Buffalo Bills faced adversity Sunday afternoon as they rallied to overcome a 21-3 deceit to knock out the Oakland Raiders, 38-35.
The Bills now sit at 2-0, tied with the New England Patriots and New York Jets atop of the AFC East.
How long will the Bills stay in first place?
Jason Campbell Is a Legitimate Starter in the NFL
2 of 50Over the course of Jason Campbell's career he has heard it from his critics. However, his solid performance against the Buffalo Bills, despite losing the game, should silence the critics for now.
Campbell completed 69.7 percent of his passes for 323 yards while scoring two touchdowns and being intercepted only once.
Ryan Fitzpatrick Is a Winner
3 of 50Ryan Fitzpatrick may only be 9-13 as a starter in Buffalo, but is now 2-0 in 2011 and needs to be considered a winner.
Fitzpatrick was a key component in Buffalo's improbable comeback Sunday with 264 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Fred Jackson Is Now One of the League's Best Running Backs
4 of 50Fred Jackson was simply a work-horse for the Buffalo Bills Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.
Jackson ran for 117 yards on 15 carries while punching in two touchdowns.
Kansas City Are Playing Like Frauds
5 of 50It's certainly hard to believe that the 0-2 Kansas City Chiefs were a 10-6 playoff team just a year ago—they are simply awful.
The Chiefs have now scored a combined 10 points throughout the first two weeks of the season—completely embarrassing.
The Detroit Lions Look Like a Playoff Team
6 of 50Can it get much better than this for the Detroit Lions? Through the first two weeks of the season, the Lions are a perfect 2-0.
The Lions absolutely beat up on the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday with a dominant 48-3 thrashing.
Matthew Stafford Is an Up-and-Coming Star
7 of 50There's no question that when Matthew Stafford is healthy, he turns the Detroit Lions into winners with his strong arm.
Stafford threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns in Detroit's win over Kansas City. Stafford now has seven touchdowns on the year with only two interceptions.
Jamaal Charles Looks to Be out for the Season
8 of 50It has been reported by several sources that Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has torn his ACL is likely to be out for the entire season.
Without Charles, the Chiefs are likely toast.
Matt Cassel Is Not the Same Quarterback That He Was a Year Ago
9 of 50What has happened to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel? He now has four interceptions on the year and has pretty much "stunk up the field" in his two performances this season.
Cassel only threw seven interceptions a year ago and simply is not the same quarterback this year.
New Orleans Offense Looks to Be Unstoppable
10 of 50The New Orleans Saints accumulated 382 yards of offense in their dominant 30-13 victory over the Chicago Bears.
The Bears may have contained and shut down Atlanta's offense a week ago, but they were obviously no match against the Saints.
Jay Cutler Was Not Effective Against New Orleans Defense
11 of 50Jay Cutler should have just sat on the bench for the entire game as his Chicago Bears were stomped on by the New Orleans Saints.
Cutler completed a putrid 42.2 percent of his passes for 244 yards and just one touchdown.
If Cutler doesn't perform, then the Bears cannot win.
Chicago's Offense Has Major Issues
12 of 50Jay Cutler could very well be playing behind the worst offensive line in the NFL.
Cutler was sacked a whooping total of six times against the Saints Sunday as he lost a total of 58 yards.
Chicago needs to protect Cutler if they want to win.
The Indianapolis Colts Are 0-2 and Are in Big Trouble
13 of 50I'm kind of feeling sorry for Indianapolis Colts fans out there—who would have thought that 2011 would start off this bad?
With Cleveland's 27-19 victory, the Colts have started the year with an 0-2 record, the first time since 1998.
Without Peyton Manning, let's just say the Colts are a very bad football team.
Peyton Hillis Is a Work-Horse
14 of 50Peyton Hillis practically ran the ball down Indianapolis' throat Sunday as he ran for 94 yards on a whooping 27 carries.
Hillis is a physical runner that will beat up on opposing team's run defenses.
Andrew Luck Is Probably on Most Colts Fan's Minds
15 of 50Would it be such a bad idea for the Indianapolis Colts just back it in for 2011 and just set their eyes on Andrew Luck?
If Peyton Manning is unable to return in 2011, it's probably a good idea to look forward to the future, which would be drafting someone like Luck.
Manning could return for another year, and possibly even play, while grooming Luck to be the quarterback of the future.
Kerry Collins Is Awful
16 of 50How can I say this in a nice and correct way? Oh well, who cares—Kerry Collins sucks. I am sure that most Indianapolis Colts fans can agree.
Collins completed only 50 percent of his passes Sunday while throwing one touchdown and being intercepted once.
Colt McCoy Rebounded Nicely in Week 2
17 of 50Colt McCoy played like a winner in Week 2 as he rebounded nicely from his relatively awful performance from Week 1.
McCoy completed 68.8 percent of his passes, certainly better than last week's 47.5 percent, while throwing one touchdown.
Donovan McNabb Should Just Retire
18 of 50Donovan McNabb may not have played as poorly as he did a week ago, but he was pretty much a non-factor in Minnesota's 24-20 loss against Tampa Bay.
McNabb completed only 60 percent of his passes for 220 yards and zero touchdowns.
He has been such a disappointment in Minnesota.
Josh Freeman Is the Comeback King
19 of 50Josh Freeman now has eight fourth quarter comebacks in his young NFL career.
Freeman and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' were losing by seven entering the fourth quarterback but managed to find a way to knock out the Minnesota Vikings.
Freeman completed 71 percent of his passes while scoring one touchdown and being picked off once.
Adrian Peterson Cannot Carry the Minnesota Vikings, He Needs Help
20 of 50No matter how dominant Adrian Peterson can be, he simply cannot throw the entire Minnesota Vikings on his shoulders—he needs some support.
Peterson ran for 120 yards against Tampa Bay Sunday as he scored two touchdowns, but the Vikings fell short 24-20.
Cam Newton Is the Real Deal
21 of 50Once Cam Newton finally turns his raw talent into an amazing skill set, he'll be one of the most dominating quarterbacks in the NFL.
Newton did not back down against one of the league's best defenses Sunday as he became just the sixth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 400-plus yards in back-to-back weeks—keep in mind that he's only played in two career games.
Against Green Bay, Newton threw for 432 yards while scoring two touchdowns but was intercepted three times.
The Green Bay Packers Are in Good Shape but Have a Lot Work on
22 of 50The Green Bay Packers may be 2-0 on the young season, but still have a lot to work on.
For instance, the Packers are simply giving up too many points over the course of two weeks, as they let New Orleans score 34 last week and let Carolina score 23 this week.
If the Packers want to win back-to-back Super Bowls, they're going to have to hold teams to less than 20 points.
Aaron Rodgers Is an MVP Candidate
23 of 50Aaron Rodgers is simply an elite quarterback—what else can you say?
Rodgers completed 19-of-30 passes for 308 yards against Carolina as he threw two touchdowns in the team's victory.
Steve Smith Is Still an Elite Wide Receiver
24 of 50Despite playing in only 14 games a year ago and being 32-years-old, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith is still an elite receiver.
Smith has suddenly reemerged with Cam Newton as the quarterback as he caught six passes for 156 yards against the Green Bay Packers Sunday afternoon.
DeAngelo Williams Continues to Struggle
25 of 50Despite signing a five-year $43 million contract this past offseason, DeAngelo Williams has had a pretty terrible year.
Williams ran for only 13 yards on five carries against Green Bay and has now ran for a grand-total of 43 yards on the season.
Is he a bust? I would say so.
Pittsburgh Rebounded Nicely Against Seattle
26 of 50When the Pittsburgh Steelers don't turn over the football, they're a very hard team to beat. Just ask the Seattle Seahawks.
The Steelers may have turned the ball over seven times last week against the Baltimore Ravens, but were perfect against the Seahawks as they walked away with a flawless 24-0 victory.
The Seattle Seahawks Are One of the Worst Offensive Teams
27 of 50The Seattle Seahawks are simply not a good football, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
Seattle scored zero points in the team's loss against Pittsburgh as the Steelers held the Seahawks to only 164 yards of total offense.
Ben Roethlisberger Was Near Perfect Against Seattle
28 of 50Can completing 22-of-30 passes get much better? Probably not.
Ben Roethlisberger was dominant against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday.
Big Ben threw for 298 yards and one touchdown in the team's 24-0 victory.
The Baltimore Ravens May Not Be an Elite Team
29 of 50Elite football teams beat inferior opponents and the Baltimore Ravens failed to do that Sunday. The Ravens fell short against the Tennessee Titans 26-13.
Baltimore simply had too many turnovers and could not stop Tennessee's offense as the Titans accumulated 432 total yards of offense.
Chris Johnson Is Not in Football Shape
30 of 50After holding out the entire preseason and training camp, Chris Johnson finally got his huge contract but has been unable to perform to it's standards.
CJ2K had yet another disappointing performance Sunday against the Ravens as he accumulated only 54 yards on 24 carries—that's a pitiful 2.2 yards per-carry.
Matt Hasselbeck Could Lead the Titans to an AFC South Title
31 of 50This may be a stretch, but with the Indianapolis Colts without Peyton Manning, the AFC South is wide-open.
If Matt Hasselbeck plays like the way he did Sunday (30-of-42, 358 yards, one touchdown, one interception) he could lead the Tennessee Titans to a division title in 2011.
Believe it.
The Washington Redskins Could Be for Real
32 of 50Who would have thought that the Washington Redskins would start 2011 off with a 2-0 record? I know that I didn't, and I'm sure that you'd agree with me.
The Redskins are now a perfect 2-0 with their 22-21 comeback victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
Rex Grossman Is a Legitimate Starting Quarterback
33 of 50Maybe it's just Shanahan's offensive system, but Rex Grossman looks like a legitimate NFL starting quarterback.
Grossman may have been intercepted twice in the team's victory over Arizona, but he performed when it mattered as he threw for 291 yards and tossed an 18-yard touchdown to Santana Moss with 5:17 left to play to pull within two points.
The Redskins Can Run the Ball Effectively
34 of 50The Washington Redskins surprisingly do a lot of things well and one of them is running the football.
Washington ran the ball for 172 total yards against the Arizona Cardinals on an incredible 35 attempts.
With the NFL turning into a pass-first league, the Redskins are staying true to the run.
Kevin Kolb and Larry Fitzgerald Appear to Have a Solid Chemistry
35 of 50Despite losing by one point against the Washington Redskins, Kevin Kolb and Larry Fitzgerald looked sharp.
The pair connected seven times for 133 yards and one touchdown.
If the Cardinals want to win, Kolb is going to have to feed Fitzgerald the ball.
The Jets Defense Is Suffocating
36 of 50The New York Jets totally dominated the Jacksonville Jaguars with their 32-3 victory.
The Jets defense recorded two sacks and forced four interceptions while putting pressure on Luke McCown and Blaine Gabbert all game.
New York's Run Game Struggled Again Against the Jaguars
37 of 50Let's face it, the New York Jets are a running football team and are simply not producing on the ground.
Last week against the Cowboys, the Jets ran for only 45 yards while averaging 2.8 yards per-carry and Sunday against the Jags, the Jets averaged 3.2 yards per-carry while accumulating 101 yards.
Entering Week 3, I think it's safe to say that New York's running game is an issue.
Tony Romo Can Come Through in the Clutch
38 of 50Believe it or not, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo can win games when he's banged up and when the pressure is on.
Romo left Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers with a rib injury and returned to lead his Cowboys to a 27-24 overtime victory.
Romo passed for 345 yards and two touchdowns.
Frank Gore's Struggles Continue
39 of 50After averaging 2.7 yards per-carry last week against the Seattle Seahawks, Frank Gore struggled yet again against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday.
Gore ran for 47 yards on 20 attempts for a pitiful 2.4 yards per-carry.
Andy Dalton Can Air the Ball out
40 of 50The rookie out of TCU looked extremely sharp in just his second start in the NFL.
Andy Dalton passed for 332 yards while scoring two touchdowns in Cincinnati's 24-22 loss against Denver.
Tim Tebow Can Play Wide Receiver for the Denver Broncos
41 of 50Tim Tebow may not have had any receptions in Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he did see some time at wide receiver.
The Denver Broncos are rather thin at the wide receiver position, with an injured Brandon Floyd, Tebow found some playing time.
A.J. Green Should Emerge as an Elite Wide Receiver
42 of 50A.J. Green played like a seasoned veteran Sunday against the Broncos as he caught 10 passes for 124 yards and one touchdown.
Green should develop into an elite wide receiver in the years moving forward.
Tom Brady Is the League's Best Player
43 of 50If you disagree, please leave some comments below stating why.
Tom Brady is without a doubt the best player in the NFL—just look at how amazing he's played in the first two weeks of the season.
Brady practically tore apart San Diego's secondary as he went 31-of-40, an amazing 77.5 completion percentage, while accumulating 423 yards and tossing three touchdowns.
No. 12 became the seventh quarterback in NFL history to throw back-to-back 400-yard plus games.
New England Appears to Be the Team to Beat in the AFC
44 of 50Bill Belichick's New England Patriots have now beaten up on two solid teams, the Miami Dolphins and the San Diego Chargers.
Sunday, the Patriots scored at will as they stomped over the Chargers, 35-21. More importantly, the Patriots defense stopped Philip Rivers and the Chargers when it mattered most.
Moving forward, it's safe to say that New England is the team to beat in the AFC.
Philip Rivers Cannot Beat Tom Brady and the Patriots
45 of 50Philip Rivers has yet to record a win over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots and simply was unable to produce when it mattered the most Sunday at Gillette Stadium.
Rivers may have thrown for 378 yards but threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball once.
The Houston Texans Are for Real
46 of 50The Houston Texans are now 2-0 on the young season and look to be the team to beat in the AFC South.
The Texans beat up on the Miami Dolphins Sunday, 23-13.
Matt Schaub threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns while completing 21-of-29 passes.
Chad Henne Came Back Down to Earth Against the Texans
47 of 50After throwing for 416 yards against the New England Patriots last Monday night, Chad Henne was unable to repeat against the Houston Texans and played rather poorly.
Henne completed only 40 percent of his passes for only 170 yards while tossing one touchdown and being picked off once.
It's official: Chad Henne is back to normal.
Michael Vick Suffered a Concussion Against the Atlanta Falcons
48 of 50Philadelphia's offensive line is going to literally kill Michael Vick.
No. 7 left Sunday night's game against the Atlanta Falcons after being hit into one of his own player's helmets and reportedly suffered a concussion.
The Eagles Are Not the Dream Team, Sorry Vince Young
49 of 50Despite Vince Young boldly stating that the Eagles are the "Dream Team," the Philadelphia Eagles fell just short against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday night.
The Eagles were unable to comeback and win after Michael Vick left the game with a concussion and Mike Kafka playing quarterback.
Atlanta knocked out the NFC's most talented team, on paper, 35-31.
Matt Ryan Is a Big-Game Performer
50 of 50Matt Ryan was able to play well when it mattered most for the Atlanta Falcons Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Ryan may have thrown two interceptions but completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 195 yards and four touchdowns.
Sunday wasn't a great night for Ryan, but he was able to lead his Falcons to the victory.
