Why We Should Keep Charlie Weis As Coach
There has been many knee jerk reactions to firing Charlie Weis.
I see the point people are making. The numbers indeed do not lie. However, I truly believe that firing the coach at this point could be an error.
I remember Weis's first game. It was against Pittsburg and they scored a touchdown on the first drive. Weis went to the defense and simply said that they had to play better or he will put the second defense in the game.
I thought, wow a coach that will finally demand accountability.
I remember when they played BYU later on that season. The previous year Notre Dame failed to run the ball and were embarrassed. That game, Notre Dame did not try to run the ball and easily won the game. My point is that Weis did what was needed to win those games and to hold players accountable.
Last game, I would love to know where that Weis had gone. Our offensive line is at the root of all of our troubles. We cannot run. Our skill position players are not given the time we need.
The defense is constantly called on to save games, which should have been won already. I do not see any reason the offensive line coach is still with the team. He has had four seasons to show he knows how to coach, he has finally proved that he does not posses that skill.
Now, if for some reason coach Weis refuses to even acknowledge this fact—then he also should be fired as he to is part of the problem. I would love to have some consistency with our head coaching position. This would be the only reason, as of now, I feel to fire Weis.
I would like to comment on the previous two coaches. Yes, the winning percentage is identical. Yes, both coaches were fired due to the lack of success on the field. But there were differences to these situations.
In Tyrone Willingham's case, he made several poor choices in recruiting and coaching. In 2002, he had a defense that actually scored points for him. In 2003, he had one of the worst lines in school history and failed to utilize the running quarterback that had won eight games for him the previous year.
I am sure Brady Quinn still has some bruises courtesy of the pounding he endured that year. The 2004 campaign again saw coaching blunders the BYU game, the Boston College fiasco that year and the referees' victory for Pittsburgh. Was the firing justified, not really as the coach was not given a fair chance. But the people in power must have been frustrated.
In coach Davie's case, the evidence is more clear-cut. He had several scandals come to light. Though the age discrimination case should have been fought, coach Davie did not handle it very well.
The players seem to play only for themselves and not for the team. Fundamentals were not taught and we suffered for it. The offense was predictable and we also lost several games in the final seconds.
Bottom line, we are playing freshman and sophomores. They will make mistakes. They need to be taught fundamentals. The only component of the team that is completely lacking is the offensive line. Again, if coach Weis cannot see this as his main concern then he also is part of the problem.
