Pac-12 Expansion: Why Move to Superconferences Will Improve College Football

Ryan RudnanskySep 18, 2011

After Texas A&M announced it would be moving to the all-powerful SEC, recent reports now have the Pac-12 potentially adding Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech.

Yep, college football is becoming a world of super-conferences, and we should be ecstatic.

Per the Austin American-Statesman, talks between the four programs and the Pac-12 have been "heating up," and Oklahoma and Oklahoma State could petition for membership in the conference as early as Monday.

Down the line, this potentially gives us two super-conferences of 16 teams in the Pac-12 and SEC, and the competition is likely to be electric.

The SEC, of course, is already the best conference in the nation, touting the likes of No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Alabama, No. 12 South Carolina, No. 14 Arkansas and No. 15 Florida. That's not to mention teams like Auburn and Mississippi State, who are borderline Top 25 teams.

With the addition of Texas A&M, they add a squad that is currently ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Imagine the battle for the SEC crown now. It's going to be fantastic. What this will do is weed out the poor teams and regularly pit some of the top teams in the nation against each other.

In the Pac-12's case, adding teams like Oklahoma and Oklahoma State automatically adds star power to a conference already boasting No. 5 Stanford, No. 10 Oregon and No. 23 USC.

There's the argument that such super-conferences will make certain schools irrelevant, even if they put a decent product on the field, and I can understand the concern there. But I think this is only going to make such teams, as well as the superpowers, play even better, and in turn make conference games even more explosive than they've already been.

For the fans, this is a win. For the conferences, this is a win. If the Pac-12 adds these teams, the rest of college football will be chasing the Pac-12 and the SEC.

What's not to like about that? Get set for some highly-entertaining football.
