Georgia Football: Report Card Grades for Coastal Carolina vs. Georgia
Game 3 for the Bulldogs was a game that was needed to get their confidence back.
They were able to do some good things in the South Carolina game but made too many mistakes in order to earn their first win of the season.
Against Coastal Carolina, the Bulldogs did everything right, which led to a 59-0 win. From offense, defense and special teams, it was a good day for the Bulldogs, and this game should give them momentum as they gear up for the rest of their SEC schedule.
Here are positions grades for the Bulldogs for the Coastal Carolina game.
Quarterbacks: A
1 of 8Aaron Murray needed a game like this. Not that he played bad the first two games, but he needed to play a mistake free-game and was able to do that. Murray completed 18 of his 26 pass attempts with 188 yards and three touchdowns.
Hutson Mason and Parker Welch also saw some playing time, and both were efficient. Mason threw for a touchdown pass, and Welch completed a 20-yard pass late in the game.
Running Backs: A-
2 of 8Isaiah Crowell earned his first career start, and while he did not put up the same numbers that he did against South Carolina, he was still able to make some plays. Crowell finished the day with 86 yards on 16 carries, which included a 27-yard touchdown.
Carlton Thomas saw his first action of the 2011 season and was also efficient. Thomas had 73-yards on 15 carries and one score. Even Brandon Harton saw some action and showed that he can make plays.
Wide Receivers: A
3 of 8Tavarres King and Malcolm Mitchell were the starters, and both are getting better as the season rolls on. King had six catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns, and Mitchell caught six passes for 43 yards and one score.
Michael Bennett, who had a breakout game against South Carolina, had four catches for 40 yards. It was good to see Orson Charles back in action after not catching a pass last week. He caught two passes for 42 yards and one touchdown.
Offensive Line: A
4 of 8It was really good to see the offensive line not making too many mistakes when it comes to penalties or breakdowns in protection. The line gave Murray plenty of time to throw and open holes for Crowell and Thomas.
One lineman to watch is Dallas Lee, who was dominant against Coastal Carolina on Saturday.
Defensive Line: A-
5 of 8Like the offensive line, the defensive line seems to get better as the season progresses. While the defensive line was not able to notch a sack, Kwame Geathers, Johns Jenkins, Abry Jones and Garrison Smith all were able to dominate the offensive line, which led to the UGA linebackers making plays all over the field.
Linbackers: A+
6 of 8And speaking of the linebackers, they were the main reason Coastal Carolina only gained 112 yards of total offense.
Safety Shawn Williams played inside linebacker and was laying licks on players all game long. Williams ended the day with three tackles, while Michael Gilliard led the team with eight stops. Jarvis Jones is really starting to come into his own, and Cornelius Washington was disruptive at outside linebacker.
Secondary: A-
7 of 8Jordan Love, who has struggled the last two games, was able to redeem himself on Saturday. Love tallied five tackles and forced one fumble.
Bacarri Rambo was solid with one interception and four tackles. Brandon Boykin had four tackles but really saw more action on offense, which is not surprising. It was actually a light day for the defensive backs because Coastal Carolina could not get anything going in the passing game.
Special Teams: A
8 of 8One of the plays of the game had to be when Blair Walsh kicked a 56-yard field goal in the first half. After missing two field goals in the first two games, it was good to see him get a huge field goal to get his confidence back.
It was another day in the office for Drew Butler, who had three punts, with two of them landing in the 20-yard line. Boykin had a kick return for 47 yards and Branden Smith had a punt return for 19 yards.
It was good to see the special teams have a day like they had on Saturday.
