NFL Scores Week 2: What Were Sunday's Most Surprising Scorelines?

Andrew GardaSep 18, 2011

If nothing else, the first two weeks of the 2011 season have been filled with some surprising performances.

Some blowouts we didn't expect, some games that were closer than we thought they'd be and a few shootouts that weren't on the radar.

How often did you look at NFL.com or ESPN.com or catch a score on the ticket under the action on your TV and say:

'What the hell happened there?'

The following are five game scorelines that surprised me—for better or worse—in NFL action today.

Detroit Lions 48, Kansas City Chiefs 3

1 of 5

It's not the win so much as the score. The absolute destruction of the Chiefs was insane and looked even worse than the score indicates—given that they lost by 45 points, that's something.

Matt Cassel continues to look out of sorts and must be pining for departed offensive coordinator Charlie Weiss. Thomas Jones looked all right, but had to really fight for his yards.

Even worse is the apparent loss of running back Jamaal Charles for the season with a torn ACL.

"

"Big blow to KC: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles tore his ACL and is out for the year, according to a source familiar with the situation."

"

The two bright spots for the Chiefs are Dwayne Bowe's 101 yards and Dexter McCluster's 51 yards on eight carries.

When I asked Will Carroll of Sports Illustrated and Football Outsiders about Charles' chances of recovering, the Chiefs got what might be another nice bright spot (although a long term one).

"

It's probably 90% return to level.

"

On the other side of the field, how good are the Lions? I expected this offense to explode, but this much? Pretty impressive and if they stay healthy, the sky might be the limit.

I expected a Lions victory. I just didn't expect a curb stomping.

Tampa Bay Bucaneers 24, Minnesota Vikings 20

2 of 5

Like the Lions-Chiefs games, it's not the outcome but the score.

In this case though, I thought the Bucs would run away early with this one.

Of course, I underestimated just how good Adrian Peterson would be and how he could almost single handedly save the Vikings.

I shouldn't be shocked since I keep saying that it doesn't matter how bad the Vikings are, Peterson is a monster and will play well.

I just didn't expect a pair of touchdowns to go with his 120 yards (141 including his receiving).

I also expected a better day from the Bucs. The Tampa Bay offense was invisible in the first half and parts of it—most notably Mike Williams—never got going. However, quarterback Josh Freeman did a good job leading them back and on the strength of a very good day by running back LaGarrette Blount and his two touchdowns.

Williams especially was terrible, compiling one catch for -4 yards. Yup. That happened.

The Bucs are mystifying me right now and not playing as well as I expected them to.

The Vikings aren't very good, but Peterson likes to remind you how good he is (hint: really, really good).

Buffalo Bills 38, Oakland Raiders 35

3 of 5

I had thought the Raiders would win this one, though I easily could have seen the Bills winning based on how good they were last week.

The thing is, I also believed that the game last week was more a glimpse of how bad the Chiefs were rather than how good the Bills were.

I certainly didn't expect a shootout today and I definitely didn't think that if they fell down by three touchdowns that the Bills would come back.

And yet they not only came back, but they won the game.

Turns out the offense for the Bills is pretty darn good.

After the Raiders spent the first half stifling quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and company, the Bills took their measure and opened up the floodgates.

The Bills played calm and controlled football and it all starts with Fitzpatrick who is most definitely the answer at quarterback for the Bills.

Let's not forget the Raiders, even though they lost a big lead. Jason Campbell looked better than I have seen him in a long time, both Darren McFadden and Mike Bush are tremendous running backs and rookie wide receiver Denarius Moore is a revelation.

Moore caught five balls for 146 yards and a touchdown and looked like a beast doing it.

The game was exciting to the end—something else I wouldn't have bet on prior to kickoff.

Green Bay Packers 30, Carolina Panthers 23

4 of 5

Say what you will about Carolina Panther quarterback Cam Newton, but the man can ball.

That's all I can say after I watched him have a second 400 yard day, this time against the Green Bay Packers.

I expected this to be a pretty big blowout. I expected the Packers to befuddle and confuse Newton and make him look like a rookie.

Despite three interceptions, Newton looked very good overall. He definitely had more than a few moments where he looked shaken by the Packers' relentless rush. For the most part though, he is a guy you really have to start respecting as he never gives up and always fights.

He took the Packers' fist to his jaw and got back up.

The Packers must be at least a little upset since they have given up 400 yards to a quarterback twice in a row. Offensively, the team looks fine. Defensively? Something is wrong here.

Maybe that something was Cam Newton.

It's not easy to brush off Newton's game. Rookies don't do what he did.

Tennessee Titans 26, Baltimore Ravens 13

5 of 5

After the beat down the Ravens put on the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, it was assumed that the Titans didn't stand a chance.

Can't say I saw this outcome, much less Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck dropping 358 yards on the Ravens defense.

Defense? Was there defense playing for Baltimore?

Certainly enough to keep Chris Johnson contained for the second straight game. That's not that shocking since the man held out and very often that hurts the guy when he comes back. Couple that with Johnson's normally slow starts and he's not going to do well initially.

Kenny Britt and Nate Washington continue to play very well at wide receiver and this team looks like it has some talent on defense.

I'm not sure what to make of the Ravens' performance. Joe Flacco played poorly, turning the ball over twice and not even cracking 200 yards. Ray Rice was able to pull together nearly 100 yards combined and had a great catch and run for a touchdown.

This is a team though that has some issues and may not be as good as we thought they were.

They aren't as good as they looked last week. I doubt they are as bad as they looked this week.

When you lose to the Titans, it's time to take a look in the mirror.
