College Football Rankings: Which Teams Got Screwed in Week 4 AP Poll?

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

The college football season has entered its fourth week, and the new AP Top 25 poll has been released.

With their win over Florida State Saturday night, the Oklahoma Sooners have retained their top ranking, with LSU, Alabama, Boise State and Stanford rounding out spots 2-5, respectively.

In addition to a couple teams in the middle of the poll, there are a few teams that also feel they should be in the Top 25 because of their strong start to the season or a single loss punished their ranking too much.

Let's look at several schools who got screwed with their ranking in the Week 4 AP poll.

Stanford, No. 5

1 of 7

Stanford's convincing 37-10 win over Arizona Saturday night was made possible by another great performance by quarterback Andrew Luck, who threw for 325 yards and two second-half touchdowns.

The Cardinal are just rolling right now, and lost in the hype of Luck's performances, the Stanford defense and running game are firing on all cylinders.

With Florida State's loss to top-ranked Oklahoma, the Cardinal moved up one spot from No. 6 to No. 5 in the Week 4 AP Top 25 poll released Sunday.

Ahead of them is Boise State, who Stanford should be ahead of. Stanford still has many quality opponents to play in the Pac-12, so they will not be behind Boise for very long.

Nebraska, No. 9

2 of 7

Nebraska is currently sitting at No. 9 in the Week 4 AP Top 25 poll and should be higher than their former Big 12 opponent, Texas A&M.

Nebraska has wins over Fresno State and Washington, both of whom are quality teams, while A&M has just two wins over Idaho and Southern Methodist.

The Cornhuskers certainly have a better resume than A&M so far this season, but when Oklahoma State and Texas A&M battle next week, the Huskers will overtake whomever loses in the polls.

South Carolina, No. 12

3 of 7

South Carolina has been dominant offensively in their three wins to open the 2011 season, with wins against East Carolina, Georgia and Navy.

Gamecocks running back Marcus Lattimore is making a case to be the Heisman Trophy winner this year with 587 yards rushing and seven touchdowns already.

But South Carolina fell two spots from No. 10 to No. 12 in this week's AP poll, despite winning all their games so far.

Not only are the Gamecocks undefeated, but they have also scored 125 points in their three wins. Oregon overtook South Carolina in the poll despite being 2-1 and having two mediocre wins.

Florida, No. 15

4 of 7

Florida is No. 15 in the new AP Top 25 poll, climbing one spot from last week.

The Gators defeated an underrated Tennessee team in their SEC conference-opener Saturday and are 3-0 with wins against UAB and Florida Atlantic.

Florida should be ranked ahead of Virginia Tech and Arkansas, who are No. 13 and 14, respectively. Both V-Tech and Arkansas are 3-0, but have played three weak teams.

Clemson, No. 21

5 of 7

The Clemson Tigers' impressive win over previously No. 21-ranked Auburn was a good performance to build on heading into ACC play next week when they host No. 11 Florida State.

The No. 21-ranked Tigers were unranked last week, but should be higher than No. 19 Texas and No. 20 TCU, both of whom have worse resumes than Clemson.

If the Tigers beat the Seminoles next week, they will soar up the rankings, but still should be higher going into Week 4.

Michigan, No. 22

6 of 7

The Michigan Wolverines are 3-0 and have joined the AP Top 25 this week after being unranked to this point.

The Wolverines have looked very strong this season and put in a great come-from-behind performance to beat Notre Dame in Week 2.

Michigan should be higher than TCU, who is 2-1 and ranked No. 20, and Baylor, whose only two wins are against TCU in a shootout and Stephen S. Austin.

Michigan State, Unranked

7 of 7

Michigan State was ranked No. 15 in the Week 3 AP poll, and after losing to Notre Dame—who had been underachieving all year—the Spartans now find themselves out of the polls entirely.

They fell more than 10 spots with one loss—seems pretty harsh to me.

The Spartans are a much better team than TCU, Illinois and Georgia Tech, who are ranked No. 20, 24 and 25, respectively.

After a matchup with Central Michigan next week, Michigan State plays Ohio State and Michigan, so they will have plenty of chances to climb back into the Top 25 soon.
