College Football Rankings 2011 Week 4: 5 Questions Facing the Oklahoma Sooners

T.J. McaloonSep 18, 2011

Last night was a great night for the Oklahoma Sooners. They went into a very hostile environment at Florida State, took the best shot that FSU could give the Sooners and fought back to win the game.

The Sooners roared out to a lead early in the game, but were shut down in the second and third quarter. FSU tied the game up and seemed to have all of the momentum, with the end result being a Florida State victory.

But, Oklahoma answered back with a big touchdown drive from Landry Jones.

So, with that big game over, what else does this Oklahoma team have to answer?

Give a click through and find out what questions are still burning for this OU team.

Can Oklahoma Survive on the Road Again?

1 of 5

Florida State had this Oklahoma team down last night. If FSU had a competent quarterback, who knows what would have happened last night?

But this wasn't the last test for the Sooners this year on the road. They still have three big games away from Norman, Oklahoma.

  • Oct. 8: It's the Red River Rivalry in Dallas, TX vs. Texas.
  • Nov.19: They're in Baylor against a surprisingly good team this year.
  • Saturday, Dec. 3: They're in Stillwater against Oklahoma State.

Who Can Carry the Offense If Landry Jones Struggles?

2 of 5

Last night's game showed that the Oklahoma Sooners can win even if they cannot move the ball through the air. But the running game—more so the lack thereof—was the alarming thing about last night's game.

Their leading rusher, Dominique Whaley, was only able to gain 71 yards on 22 carriers with no touchdowns. His longest rush on the day was for just nine yards.

Let's say that another team down the road can stop the passing game like Florida State. What happens if the defense cannot bail them out again like last night?

Will the Oklahoma Defense Carry This Team to a Big 12 Title?

3 of 5

They dominated the play yesterday at Florida State, and they did it with big hits, big plays and turnovers. When Florida State was driving, looking to tie this game up, they stepped up with big play after big play.

So, who is the more important piece to this Oklahoma puzzle?

Is it Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles of the Oklahoma offense?

Or is it the 11 men that start on the Oklahoma defense?

Can Bob Stoops Continue To Live Up to His Nickname, "Big Game Bob"?

4 of 5

He sure did live up to his name with his victory last night against Florida State. He has lived up to the name Big Game Bob in the past with a number of Big 12 championships and BCS bowl appearances.

But when it comes to games outside of the friendly confines of Norman, Okla., his ability to win big games sometimes dwindles.

Maybe because of Stoops' great defense and the leadership of Landry Jones, this is the year that Bob can make it back to the National Title Game and win it. Stoops has been there before; he should get back there this year.

Where Will This Oklahoma Sooners Team End?

5 of 5

This team has all the makings of playing in New Orleans in the Superdome for the 2012 BCS National Championship. The question is, will they end there this year?

IF everyone stays healthy,

IF they can avoid bad bounces and unlucky breaks

and

IF their defense stays on this elite level, then yes, the Oklahoma Sooners are going to be playing in the National Championship Game.

They should come into the game a perfect 12-0. And they will be playing the Boise State Broncos in a rematch from the Tositios Fiesta Bowl.
