Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. College Football: AP Top 25 Saturday Knockouts
Week 3 of the 2011 college football season is in the books, and no one will be talking about what happened on the gridiron, as the action inside the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena trumped it all.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. knocked out Victor Ortiz with 2:59 remaining in the fourth round to remain unbeaten, and then challenged HBO ring-side reporter Larry Merchant.
There were plenty of crushing blows on the football field Saturday, but none caused more damage than Mayweather's two so-called "cheap shots" inside the ring.
Three teams that started the week ranked in the AP Top 25 met a similar fate as Ortiz in the ring, as all four will need to get up off the canvas.
Let's take a closer look at the programs that were likely knocked out of the polls Saturday.
Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-2)
1 of 3The Mississippi State Bulldogs have now lost two SEC games in a row and will undoubtedly fall out of the No. 25 spot.
Losing to two quality opponents is nothing to be ashamed of, but pollsters are not going to keep a two-loss team in the rankings this early in the season, especially when you were already in the final spot.
The program has the opportunity to get off the mat vs. Louisiana Tech at home next week—before facing Georgia on the road.
Auburn Tigers (2-1)
2 of 3The voters have already been unimpressed with last year's national champion by dropping them out of the rankings after escaping with a 42-38 home win over the Utah State Aggies to open the season.
Saturday's 38-24 road loss to the Clemson Tigers is likely to knock them out of the No. 21 spot, as the opponent was from the ACC—not the SEC.
Auburn's win over Mississippi State also loses some of its weight, as the Bulldogs dropped a 19-6 home contest to the LSU Tigers on Thursday night.
Arizona State (2-1)
3 of 3Arizona State was handed a 17-14 road defeat against the Illinois Fighting Illini Saturday, which will definitely drop them out of the rankings.
USC has been on the fringe the last two weeks and will likely replace the Sun Devils in the No. 22 spot.
They could regain that spot quickly by picking up a win over the Trojans next week at Sun Devil Stadium.
