College Football: Heisman Trophy Watch Heading into Week 4

Matt ShetlerSep 17, 2011

Another fantastic week of college football is in the books and with that comes our weekly look at the Heisman Trophy race.

We had some fantastic individual performances in Week 3 and with that comes a lot of change in the rankings.

We have a new clubhouse leader, ending Andrew Luck's hold over the No. 1 spot.

Also we have three new members of the top 10 as Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon fell out, mostly due to Oklahoma State playing a very late game this week that not too many people got to watch.

USC's Robert Woods also fell out this week and would be the next guy in, followed by Nebraska's Taylor Martinez.

So with that being said, let's jump right into this week's rankings.

10. Case Keenum

1 of 10

Last Week's Result: 346 yards passing, 3 touchdowns in 35-34 win over Louisiana Tech

2011 Season Stats: 1116 passing yards, 9 touchdowns

Last Week's Ranking: NR

It's hard to ignore what Keenum has done throughout his career and now that he's healthy, he can take a run at the record books.

He likely doesn't have much of a shot at the award playing at Houston, but I will include him for career accomplishments.

9. Chris Rainey

2 of 10

Last Week's Result: 110 rushing yards, 112 receiving yards, 1 touchdown in 33-23 win over Tennessee

2011 Stats: 305 rushing yards, 234 receiving yards, 5 touchdowns

Last Week's Ranking: 9

Some may question weather or not Rainey belongs on this list, but he does.

He's a game changer and probably the most versatile player on the list.

Rainey produces not only in rushing and receiving, but in the special teams game as well. He not only has a return touchdown on the season but even blocked a punt against the Vols. He's capable of making a play any time, anywhere and in any situation.

8. Matt Barkley

3 of 10

Last Week's Performance: 322 passing yards, 5 touchdowns

2011 Stats: 887 passing yards, 9 touchdowns

Last Week's Ranking: NR

When Barkley arrived on the scene in Southern California two years ago, he came with a lot of hype.

This is the type of season we imagined him having. Barkley is off to a great start in 2011 and with the amount of weapons he has at USC, this could be just the beginning of something special.

7. Russell Wilson

4 of 10

Last Week's Result: 340 passing yards, 40 rushing yards, 3 touchdowns in 49-7 win over Northern Illinois

2011 Stats: 785 passing yards, 125 rushing yards, 9 touchdowns

Last Week's Ranking: NR

Wilson has been electrifying so far and has proven to be the missing piece the Badgers have been missing.

He's making plays and taking care of the football and has Wisconsin rolling.

6. Robert Griffin

5 of 10

Last Week's Result: 256 passing yards, 70 rushing yards, 3 touchdowns in 48-0 win over Stephen F. Austin

2011 Stats: 615 passing yards, 105 rushing yards, 8 touchdowns

Last week's Ranking: 5

Griffin was back in action for the first time since his spectacular Week 1 performance against TCU and he didn't disappoint.

His eight touchdowns are right up there with everyone else's numbers and he's played one less game.

5. Denard Robinson

6 of 10

Last Week's Result: 98 yards passing, 198 yards rushing in 31-3 win over Eastern Michigan

2011 Stats: 534 yards passing, 398 yards rushing, 8 touchdowns

Last Week's Ranking: 4

One week after after a spectacular all-around performance, Robinson decided to run for nearly 200 yards on the ground as Michigan improved to 3-0 on the season.

He's also made a habit of finding the end zone of late as all eight of his touchdowns have come in the past two weeks.

4. Landry Jones

7 of 10

Last Week's Results: 198 yards passing, 2 touchdowns in 23-14 win over Florida State.

2011 Stats: 558 yards passing, 3 touchdowns

Last Week's Ranking: 2

Jones passed the test and won a big game on the road, but despite the win and the fact that he quarterbacks the No. 1 team in the nation, Jones slips a couple of spots this week.

His numbers aren't as impressive as usual and he sits with only two touchdown passes as we head into the fourth week of the season, but I expect that to change very soon.

3. Andrew Luck

8 of 10

Last Week's Result: 325 yards passing, 2 touchdowns.

2011 Stats: 784 yards passing, 9 touchdowns

Last Week's Ranking: 1

I mentioned we had a new No. 1. Therefore, our former holder of the top spot slips to No. 3.

Not really any fault of his own as Luck had a good game on the road against Arizona, but our top two guys are off to great starts so they get the bump this week.

Luck is still a heavy favorite to capture the Heisman Trophy and it wouldn't surprise me if he reclaims the top spot very soon.

2. Kellen Moore

9 of 10

Last Week's Result: 455 yards, 5 touchdowns in 40-15 win over Toledo.

2011 Stats: 721 yards passing, 8 touchdowns

Last Week's Ranking: 6

This was a very tough choice to make and I almost went with a tie for the first spot, but what fun would that be?

Moore jumps ahead of Luck this week thanks to a big performance Friday night against Toledo.

He is just so good. He always seems to make the right decisions with the ball and he is one of the most accurate passers that the college game has ever seen.

Seeing how good his numbers are already, we need to remember that he's done this in one fewer game than most other guys have played at this point in the season.

It was extremely tough to keep Moore out of the top spot in the rankings.

1. Marcus Lattimore

10 of 10

Last Week's Result: 249 yards rushing, 3 touchdowns in 24-21 win over Navy.

2011 Stats: 541 yards rushing, 7 touchdowns

Last Week's Ranking: 3

Lattimore is making his case for being not only the best back in the nation, but the best player as well.

His performance Saturday against Navy was remarkable. Very rarely does one player single-handedly defeat an opponent, but that's exactly what Lattimore did to Navy on Saturday.

Both Lattimore and the Gamecocks are off to a solid start to the season. His numbers just jump off the page and his impact to his team can't be measured, so Lattimore is your new No. 1 in the Heisman Trophy rankings.
