EPL Hot 11: Aguero, Adebayor and Yakubu Record Doubles in Match Day 5

Jonathan WooSep 18, 2011

Goal scoring was the theme of Match Day 5 in the English Premier League this weekend, as teams scored an average of 3.8 goals per game. Just one match, Aston Villa vs. Newcastle, finished with fewer than three goals scored.

Emmanuel Adebayor scored a late double for Tottenham in its 4-0 win over the undermanned Liverpool. Yakubu recorded a double of his own against Arsenal in a 4-3 decision for Blackburn, and both Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero continued their scoring form.

Every Wednesday, 11 footballers in the Premier League will make up the EPL Hot 11, a fluctuating power ranking that highlights the top performers over the course of the entire season. Dependent on their match-day performances, players may move up or down the list each week.

Sergio Aguero

1 of 11

Sergio Aguero claims the top spot in this week's EPL Hot 11, though Wayne Rooney pretty much handed it over to City's summer signing.

The Argentine international recorded a double in City's 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage, kicking his scoring total up to eight goals in his first season in England's top flight.

City continues to ride a hot Aguero as the club keeps its unbeaten streak through five games.

Wayne Rooney

2 of 11

Wayne Rooney should have had a hat trick in United's compelling 3-1 result over Chelsea at Old Trafford. Instead, the Premier League's leading scorer added just one goal to his season total.

A botched penalty kick and a point-blank header right into Petr Cech's arms late in the match would have sealed the game for United, but Rooney would have to settle for his lone goal.

The 25-year-old is proving to be one of the consistent playmakers so far in the 2011 campaign, so his miscues come as a surprise to many.

He might be the top scorer in England's top flight, but he takes second place in the league's Hot 11.

Nani

3 of 11

Nani's stock is increasing.

After picking up an assist last weekend, the Portuguese international's form continues to shine with another assist and a fabulous goal of his own against Chelsea.

If it isn't Ashley Young, it's Javier Hernandez. If it isn't Hernandez, it's Nani. United is stacked with playmakers all over the field, and Nani's contributions are sometimes immeasurable given his creativity on the ball.

David Silva

4 of 11

After recording his first two assists of the season last weekend, David Silva added another in City's 2-2 draw with Fulham.

Silva probably won't be scoring too many goals with the flurry of goal-scoring options in City's lineup. Instead, the Spaniard will be creating goals for the likes of Edin Dzeko, Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero.

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old Silva seems to be a jack-of-all-trades type of midfielder. With two goals and three assists on the season, Roberto Mancini has a steady provider to put in his starting 11 every match day.

Emmanuel Adebayor

5 of 11

Emmanuel Adebayor scored his debut goal for Spurs last weekend, and he continued his good fortune for Tottenham with a late-game double on Sunday in a 4-0 result against Liverpool.

The Reds were down to just nine men at the time, but goals are goals. And with the slow start that Tottenham has had, every score builds confidence as the club begins to climb the table.

The former Arsenal and City striker looks to be the missing piece for Harry Redknapp as Adebayor presents a big target in the attacking third.

Yakubu

6 of 11

At a wet and soggy Ewood Park, Yakubu recorded himself a double in an astounding 4-3 Blackburn win over Arsenal on Saturday.

After the Gunners jumped out to a 1-0 lead via a Gervinho goal, Yakubu received a wonderful ball and was played onside before calmly sliding his ball past Arsenal's keeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Nine minutes after Alex Song's own goal brought the game level, the Nigerian simply poked in his second goal of the day from inside the six-yard box. Replays showed he was offside, but the referee's assistant missed it, and Rovers never looked back.

Ashley Young

7 of 11

Ashley Young had his foot in the opening goal that eventually resulted in a 3-0 United lead at halftime.

Although replays show that the beneficiary of Young's cross, Chris Smalling, was offside, the goal went into the books nonetheless, and United's summer signing notched his fifth assist of the season.

With Young and Nani contributing to the club's rampant scoring spree, who knows when United will drop in form.

Edin Dzeko

8 of 11

Edin Dzeko has been one of City's best scoring options so far this season, but the mammoth of a striker created a goal in the club's 2-2 draw at Fulham.

Just 11 seconds into the second half, a half-pitch cross up the field found Dzeko, who headed it onto the foot of Sergio Aguero, who never hesitated to slot home his second goal of the day.

Although City's 100 percent streak came to an end on Sunday, the club will only benefit further if Dzeko is scoring and creating goals in the attacking third.

Javier Hernandez

9 of 11

Javier Hernandez keeps his place in the EPL Hot 11 this week, but for all the wrong reasons.

After his double last weekend, the Mexican probably should have scored against Chelsea. Instead, during the same run of events that should have had Chicharito on the score sheet, a late challenge from Ashley Cole forced the second-year United striker to be subbed out.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that Hernandez has an apparent leg injury, but provided no specifics.

Good thing United still have Dimitar Berbatov. With Hernandez sidelined and Danny Welbeck still recovering from a hamstring injury, the Bulgarian should find a place on the pitch once again.

Sebastian Larsson

10 of 11

After making his debut in the first edition of the EPL Hot 11 with an early contender for goal of the season, Sebastian Larsson makes his return after a great performance in Sunderland's 4-0 result over Stoke City at the Stadium of Light.

Larsson had a foot in the Black Cats' first two goals. His curling ball from the corner found Titus Bramble who slotted a shot home through a number of players. Just minutes later, his cross intended for Nicklas Bendter instead found the head of Jonathan Woodgate, who accidentally headed it into his own net.

To polish off the game, the Swede curled a set piece into the side netting, catching Asmir Begovic moving the wrong direction.

Larsson has just two goals on the season, but both scores have been top quality.

Luka Modric

11 of 11

Luka Modric netted his first goal of the season for Spurs, and it was a belting first-touch attempt from beyond the 20-meter mark.

Tottenham held onto the Croatian sensation for precisely that, as his cracking goal triggered a rout of a Liverpool squad that was reduced to nine men just shortly after the hour mark.

Spurs have struggled early on, but have rebounded nicely to secure back-to-back league wins to 11th in the table.

Modric was heavily targeted over the summer by Andre Villas-Boas and Chelsea, but Harry Redknapp stayed firm and ultimately kept the 26-year-old at White Hart Lane, a move he already hasn't regretted.
