Ohio State vs Miami (FL): 6 Things We Learned from Saturday's Final Score
Miami versus Ohio State is in the books, and surprisingly the outcome was never in doubt as the Hurricanes ran all over the Buckeyes in a 24-6 Miami victory.
Both sides had to deal with suspensions, so the Buckeyes won't be able to play their excuse card after looking poorly Saturday night.
Both teams showed what they were made of in a prime time showdown. Let's take a look at what we learned.
The Canes Are Still a Factor in the ACC
1 of 6Even with the suspensions, Miami was a couple bounces away and likely should have beaten Maryland in Week 1.
There was some doubt about what type of effort you would see from the Canes amid all the off-field allegations.
What they showed Saturday night was that they still have the talent to be a factor in the ACC. If they play physical and use their weapons properly, Al Golden's team should be able to compete with anyone in the nation.
Ohio State Is Very Overrated
2 of 6Newsflash to the Buckeyes: Miami isn't Akron or Toledo.
Taking a break from the MAC, the Buckeyes got their first real test of the season and were exposed in a few areas.
The Buckeyes couldn't stop the run as Lamar Miller set the tone from the game's opening play. Miami gained 247 yards on the ground, including 188 from Miller.
In all, the Buckeyes surrendered 370 yards of total offense and were never really in the game.
Offensively the Buckeyes couldn't get anything going all night. It didn't matter who the quarterback was—nothing was working as Ohio State only had 200 yards of offense on the night, only getting past the 200-yard mark thanks to two late meaningless completions.
Jacory Harris Will Never Learn
3 of 6Harris has all the talent in the world, but wants to make the big play too often. It's killed Miami in the past and could have done so versus the Buckeyes.
There are times to take shots down the field, and times not to, and until Harris figures out the difference, it's still an adventure with him under center.
This game could have been a whole lot worse for Ohio State had Harris not tried to force the ball down field twice. Both times, the Hurricanes had all the momentum and Harris nearly gave it away.
He did make several good decisions checking the ball down, but he still gets greedy too often.
There Are Quarterback Issues in Columbus
4 of 6Two-quarterback systems rarely work.
It's often said that if you have two quarterbacks, you really don't have one.
The Braxton Miller-Joe Bauserman combination struggled big time, completing only four passes on the night for a mere 36 yards.
You aren't going to win many football games like that.
Ohio State head coach Luke Fickell needs to settle on one guy. It may be time to turn the offense over to the freshman Miller, and live with any freshman mistakes that come with the territory.
Miami's Defense Came to Play
5 of 6Al Golden wanted a big effort from his defense—and he got one.
The Canes were the more physical team and made big plays every time it seemed like the Buckeyes were finally going to get things going on offense.
They forced two turnovers and allowed less than four yards per play on the night.
If Miami can give this type of effort defensively week in and week out, the Canes will be very tough to beat.
Luke Fickell Doesn't Have a Clue
6 of 6If Fickell is auditioning to get the Ohio State job on a full-time basis, he's not off to a very good start.
The fact his team is not playing well on either side of the ball is his biggest problem, but he has some others.
The quarterback situation needs address sooner rather than later, and the message he is sending isn't a good one.
Not too many times do you see coaches hold onto their time outs in the fourth quarter of a game that is still within two possessions.
The way the Buckeyes offense way playing, they had very little shot of coming back, but you still have to extend the game as a coach. Stranger things have happened before.
We've seen players quit on their teams before—not very often do you see a coach quit on his team.
