College Football Week 3: The Biggest Surprises from Early Games
Wow. We are only halfway through Saturday and Week 3's early games have already delivered some crazy surprises. With amazingly dominant offensive performances, late game heroics and nail biting upsets, Week 3 looks poised to deliver some classic football.
Although it's still early in the day, lets take a look at the three biggest surprises from Week 3 thus far.
Penn State vs. Temple
1 of 3Penn State avoided a big upset, as they narrowly sled by Temple 14-10. PSU's Michael Zordich scored with 2:42 left to lift Penn State to their 29th straight victory over the Owls.
The Nittany Lion's victory did not come easy, as Temple pushed their interstate rivals to the limit.
The Owl's had a chance to seal the game in their last drive but were ultimately unable to convert, as Mike Gerardi was sacked on fourth down.
Although Paterno and the Lions escaped with the important win, I'm sure this victory was far too close for comfort.
Iowa vs. Pitt
2 of 3What a comeback by the Iowa Hawkeyes over the Pitt Panthers. Led by QB James Vandenberg's 162- yard fourth quarter, the Hawkeyes completed the biggest comeback in their history, escaping with a 31-27 victory.
Trailing by 17 early in the fourth quarter, Vandenberg engineered three amazing TD drives, capping the comeback with 1:32 left on a 22-yard toss to Manley.
This was a much needed win for Iowa (2-1) whose offense was dragging until Vandenberg's huge forth quarter.
As for Pitt, let's hope that this late game collapse doesn't haunt them for the rest of the season.
Auburn vs. Clemson
3 of 3In Saturday's biggest shock thus far, Clemson upset No. 21 Auburn 38-24.
Auburn's 17-game win streak finally came to an end, as Clemson QB Tahj Boyd threw for 386 yards and four touchdowns. We all know of Auburn's powerful offense, but today's game showed big problems in their D. Clemson gained a ridiculous 624 total yards, constantly controlling possession and recording 32 first downs.
Could this already spell the end for Auburn's season? If not, it at least showed the rest of the nation the big cracks in their defense.
It has already been an action packed Saturday with these three crazy games, but I'm sure there are many more surprises in store. Stay tuned.
