Brady Hoke or Luke Fickell: Which First-Year Coach Will Finish with More Wins?

Chris HumphreyJun 6, 2018

While it’s not Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler in this version of the Michigan/Ohio State rivalry, this involves the first-year coaches of the Buckeyes and Wolverines in Luke Fickell and Brady Hoke, who take over two entirely different situations.

Fickell takes over the Buckeyes in a storm of controversy with the departure of Jim Tressel and Terrelle Pryor while Brady Hoke takes over Michigan in an effort to bring the Wolverines back to national prominence in college football.

The following slide show will give a great idea of whether Hoke or Fickell will finish with more wins at their respective programs in the Big Ten.

Michigan Schedule

1 of 5

The remaining schedule for the Michigan Wolverines:

vs. Ohio State on November 26th

Schedule Breakdown

2 of 5

After the Wolverines mauled Eastern Michigan Saturday, 31-3, at the Big House, the rest of the Michigan schedule will not be too difficult until you get to the final two games of the season where the team will welcome Nebraska to Michigan Stadium in the Legends division title game.

Ohio State Schedule

The remaining schedule for the Buckeyes:

vs. Colorado on September 24th

vs. Michigan State on October 1st

at Nebraska on October 8th

at Illinois on October 15th

vs. Wisconsin on October 29th

vs. Indiana on November 5th

Schedule Breakdown

4 of 5

With the showdown on South Beach against the Hurricanes to be played Saturday afternoon, the Buckeyes will not have an easy road to the Big Ten title game this season as games with Michigan State, Nebraska and Wisconsin dot the month of October.

Brady Hoke vs. Luke Fickell: Win Total

5 of 5

With both Hoke and Fickell leading two talented teams this season, I believe Hoke will have more wins after the 2011 season ends this January.

Luke Fickell will finish his first season in Columbus with eight wins in his head coaching debut while Brady Hoke will revive the Michigan program back to a 10-win season in Ann Arbor.

While I don’t see either of these coaches moving to coach another program, I believe the Michigan/Ohio State game will have some new breath of life into the best rivalry in all of college football.
