SEC Football: What Are Chances of East Beating West in 2011 Conference Title?

Dan VastaJun 7, 2018

The entire nation thinks the top two teams in the SEC West are probably the best two teams in the nation. No offense to Oklahoma, Boise State or Florida State, but the SEC has to be considered the favorites since they have won five straight BCS National Championships.

So, with the SEC West being the best of the best, there is zero chance that the SEC East can knock them off right?

WRONG!

The South Carolina Gamecocks have all the talent in the world to compete and upset whoever comes out of the SEC West.

Marcus Lattimore is the best downhill runner in America and Stephen Garcia is exceptional as well as a runner. The two are impossible to take down in the backfield and once they get up field, they are unstoppable.

Alshon Jeffrey is the perfect target in the passing game for Garcia, with his big paws and precise route running. Ace Sanders is a solid No. 2, but don't forget that Lattimore is the best receiver in the nation arguably, as far as running backs are concerned.

This offense gets no credit, and yet they hung 24 on a solid Georgia defense (three TD's were on special teams/defense). Their offense is only going to get better with Garcia developing a solid rapport with his receivers.

Did I mention the All-America that Melvin Ingram displayed against Georgia int their 45-42 victory? Cocky was flexing his muscle up front thanks to a big, fast and athletic front four.

Devin Taylor, Melvin Ingram, Jadeveon Clowney, Travian Robertson and Aldrick Fordham have wreaked a ton of havoc, and they stack up well with LSU and Alabama.

Their schedule is not a cake walk by any means, but I am in love with it. They may not see another top 25 squad until they play Arkansas in early November. They get Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Tennessee and Auburn before they go on the road to Pig Sooey.

The only question I have with this squad is whether or not Stephen Garcia can put together a huge game against the big boys? Is he capable? Absolutely!

I may be alone on this one, but the Gamecocks surely have the talent to knock off the West winner with all of that depth on defense and with their superstar talent on offense.

Now, let us not discount the Florida Gators. I mean, their defense has locked down every receiving corps thus far in the season.

Also, don't look now but Will Muschamp has his offense starting to click on all cylinders. Their defense is not far behind the Gamecocks, and even though Florida has to go to Columbia, there is a chance they may only have one or two losses, so an upset on the road could give the Gators a chance to play in the SEC Championship.

No disrespect to the Vanderbilt Commodores or the Tennessee Volunteers or even the Georgia Bulldogs, but at the moment, the SEC East is a two-team race with the winner having a solid shot at dethroning the heavyweight favorites in a one game scenario.
