American Idle: The Computer Is Wrong...Again!

Ron JohnsonNov 24, 2008

This one is for Michael. The guy has been asking me over and over to call out the Horns and prove my point in regards to Oklahoma's win this past weekend. After the win, I said that Oklahoma did enough to move past Texas for the #3 spot. But that apparently opened Pandora's Box in Austin.

So while the voters and the B/R Nation will most likely put Oklahoma ahead of Texas, the BCS Computer decided to not only not punish the Longhorns for a bye week, but also move them to #2 instead of the obvious choice in Oklahoma. Now I am a SEC guy, and I have no love for the Big XII, but even I was in shock when I found out that the BCS chose Texas over Oklahoma.

So who got it right? B/R Nation and the voters or the BCS Computer? You be the judge.

#1) Alabama Crimson Tide (#1 AP Top 25, #1 B/R Top 25, #1 BCS)

#2) Texas Longhorns (#4 AP Top 25, #4 B/R Top 25, #2 BCS)

#3) Oklahoma Sooners (#3 AP Top 25, #5 B/R Top 25, #3 BCS)

#4) Florida Gators (#2 AP Top 25, #3 B/R Top 25, #4 BCS)

#5) USC Trojans (#5 AP Top 25, #6 B/R Top 25, #5 BCS)

Alabama

The Tide are the last man standing in regards to the undefeateds in the Top 5 in the country. So it's no question that they should be #1 on everybody's list. But the Tide have a strong order coming up this weekend in the form of an upset minded Auburn Tigers team. Florida needs Auburn to lose this game to improve their SOS (as if they need it) and improve their chances. But first, both teams have a tall order this weekend before their showdown in Atlanta on December 6th.

Oklahoma

The Sooners lost to Texas in Dallas (which they call neutral, but really isn't) and gave up 40+ points to those same Longhorns. Then Texas Tech shocks the Longhorns (who were top ranked at the time) with a six point victory in Lubbock. Then the Sooners turn around off their bye week and demolish the Raiders in Norman by 40+ points! Following that victory, many of us had been convinced that the Sooners were worthy of the #2 spot. In all honesty, someone needs to explain why they weren't given the spot. Texas may have beaten Oklahoma...but Oklahoma beat Texas Tech. This weekend, Oklahoma has a tough team in Oklahoma State this weekend in Stillwater. Win that one, and there is no question that Oklahoma should be #2.

Texas

So the Horns were idle last weekend, and they have a showdown with the Texas A&M Aggies this Thursday night. So...what happens if this ends in a tie? The records I mean. Right now, the standings show Oklahoma ahead of both Texas Tech and Texas. So if Oklahoma wins in Stillwater, Texas wins in Austin and Tech beats Baylor, who deserves the Big XII South? But even bigger, with two teams who have nothing left to lose, will either of them play spoiler to the Horns or the Raiders? And will the lost to Texas Tech prove to be the downfall of the Horns? They're at #2 because of that win in Dallas, and we all know that is true. So are the Horns as good as advertised or are the Raiders are overrated as shown this past weekend in Norman?

Florida

Michael asked me if anyone either in Gainesville or outside of Gainesville gave a damn about Florida playing The Citadel. Well, Michael, I have your answer: You bet your ass we did. If you asked everyone in Austin if they gave a damn about that game against Baylor, they would say the same thing. Every game counts, Michael...especially if you're in contention for a National Title. In fact, thanks to Oklahoma (and no thanks to Texas) it's clear now that the winner of the SEC Championship Game will play for the BCS Championship. If Florida wins out, they have a better chance of being in the game than Texas. Florida knows that Florida State is motivated and ready. So who would win between a newly awarded Rhodes Scholar and a history making Heisman Trophy Candidate? No one knows for sure why the Gators played The Citadel in November, but if you look at Florida's schedule, more than half of the team's on that schedule are bowl bound.

USC

The Trojans should feel like the luckiest team on the planet right now. Not only do they have a chance to claim the Pac-10 Championship this weekend if Oregon beats Oregon State, but they too are cashing in on Oklahoma's destruction of Texas Tech. Thanks to the three-way tie in the Big XII South right now, and depending on how the three amigos finish the remainder of the season, USC can easily move right up to #2 in the event that the BCS Computer desperately needs someone to play the SEC when it's over. But in order to ensure that they get the chance, they have to hope that Oregon State loses to Oregon. Because if the Beavers win, no matter what the committee wants, they play Penn State in the Rose Bowl.

So with Bleacher Report Top 25 coming out on Wednesday, will we get it right or will the B/R Nation also agree with the BCS Computer? Either way, Michael is right about one thing: Florida losing to an unranked Ole Miss is bad...but Ole Miss beating LSU by double digits sounds a lot worse than a one point loss. Did I forget to mention that both LSU and Ole Miss are heading to a bowl game as well? So, Michael, we'll compare schedules and see where that takes us. How's that sound?
