Chelsea FC: 5 Reasons Why Romelu Lukaku Should Play Against Man U

Shafat ChowdhuryJun 6, 2018

Unless you've been living under a rock this past week, then you know that the biggest English Premier League match will take place between Chelsea and Manchester United.

With an impressive showing on Tuesday during their UEFA Champions League clash against Bayern Leverkusen, the Blues hope to carry their good form to Old Trafford in an attempt to beat a red hot United team.

However, one issue that Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas constantly has to deal with is his selection of the Starting XI. The main source of this problem revolves around his selection of the lead striker.

With players like Fernando Torres, Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba, one can understand why Villas-Boas may get headaches when choosing his center-forward.

Even with the aforementioned trio of strikers, one player has been forgotten: Romelu Lukaku. The 18-yearr-old Belgian has only played 10 minutes against Norwich City.

Although that was not very good EPL experience, I firmly believe that Lukaku can shine if he is given the chance to start against Manchester United.

Physical Dominance

One of the main reasons that Chelsea has been able to compete against the Red Devils in past years is because of Didier Drogba.

The Ivorian has bossed around the Manchester defense for years and he is without a doubt still able to do it even at his old age due to his tremendous size and strength.

Unfortunately, Drogba is a game-time decision due to a concussion he suffered whilst playing against Norwich City. If only Chelsea had another striker who was fast and strong just like Drogba.

Enter Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian is taller and stronger than Drogba, which would translate to him being an even bigger threat against the Red Devils' back four. His size and strength is unbelievable.

He can curl Patrice Evra and Fabio with each hand, while giving Nemanja Vidic and Jonny Evans piggy-back rides all at the same time. I may be exaggerating but I think you get the point.

In addition, if you watched the Manchester United duel against Benfica mid-week, you will see that their defense constantly struggled against Oscar Cardozo, another gigantic forward.

This proves that Man U defenders will be faced with constant problems if they come up against an impressive physique, which further proves that Lukaku would be dangerous in this clash.

Current Form of Other Chelsea Strikers

So far this season, Chelsea have not looked very convincing against their opposition even though they have managed to edge out results.

The main reason behind their unconvincing start is the lack of production coming from the strikers. Neither Drogba nor Fernando Torres have scored this season and Anelka has only grabbed a goal against West Brom after it took a heavy deflection.

Salomon Kalou is atrocious as the lead striker which leaves Villas-Boas one more option, which would be Lukaku.

No player on Chelsea has scored more than one goal this season in the EPL and this cannot stand against a superior team such as Man U.

If Chelsea do not have a leading forward, the Red Devils will be able to settle in and control the tempo of the match. If Lukaku did start, he would be able to impose himself into the match and this would lead to Chelsea playing better football with a focal point in attack.

He Is a Passionate Fan of Chelsea Himself

You know who gets angrier than the players after a loss? The fans do, and that is exactly what Lukaku is. A fan of Chelsea ever since he was a child and now a player, this means that he would hate Man U more than any other person.

If he is a true Chelsea fan, then he will remember that this is the same team that beat Chelsea in the 2008 UEFA Champions League (sorry I had to bring that up).

This is the same team that knocked the Blues out of the competition last year (once again, my apologies Blues fans).

With so much anger stored inside of him, there would be no better way for him to release it than going against Man U. The Belgian would want revenge for all the past years, which in turn would earn him more love from the Stamford Bridge faithful.

No Better Way of Gaining Experience

Year in and year out, this continues to be the biggest test for the Blues. If Lukaku truly is the future for the West London outfit, then it would only be reasonable for him to get a taste of the biggest clash in the EPL.

If he gains experience at such a young age, then it would benefit him and would make him an even better striker in the future.

It would also teach him how to play during those big games considering there are several big matches that take place everywhere, ranging from fixtures against other high profile teams such as Liverpool and Man City as well as matches in the UEFA Champions League.

His Favorite Goal

5 of 5

Going back to the point that Lukaku has always been a Chelsea fan, nothing proved it like his first interview when introduced as a Chelsea player.

One reporter asked him what his favorite goal was and Lukaku responded that it was when Jimmy Floyd-Hasslebaink scored a screamer of a volley.

You know the funny thing? That goal was against nobody other than the team the Blues play this Sunday, Manchester United. He claimed that this was the goal that transformed him into a Chelsea fan.

If he were to play against the Red Devils this Sunday, he would want to do nothing more than emulate the former Dutch international. Romelu Lukaku has a thirst for goal and if he is given a chance this Sunday, he will be able to quench his thirst.
