College Football Week 3: 5 Things Every Girl Should Know

Hilary LiDestriSep 16, 2011

OK, girls, it's time to take off the training wheels and get down to, well, two.  We are not going to try to reinvent the wheel, why?  Because the wheel is perfect.

Think about it—college football is as near to perfect a way to spend a day as ... If you don't believe me, ask yourself when's the last time you saw an update to a toilet—good as is, right?

The point is at least six of 10 men love college football, which means you have some decisions to make for four months minimum.

I can almost guarantee you any dude who cherishes college football has at least a passing interest in pro football.  What does this mean to you, specifically?

Make some plans between Thursday evening and Tuesday morning unless you want to alienate yourself from the men in your life.

If it were me, and it isn't, I'd stick around, try and learn a few things, cook, fetch and retreat to my "ladies lair" to sneak peeks at the shows I've had to TiVo because I've been far too busy being everything to everyone—the men in my life included.

This is what you might want to acknowledge for conversational purposes on Saturday.  You will shine, no doubt.  Don't forget, with men it's not just how you say it, it's what you say.  No arguing.  No asserting.

McCoy-to-Ship Again?

1 of 5

When a team is rebuilding, it is not often they have an emotional hook.  The University of Texas has a hook that could snare a Great White.  McCoy to Shipley.  Used to be Colt to Jordan.  Now it's Case to Jaxon.

It warms my heart—as if we need anymore warmth in Texas.  The point is, while Mack Brown is chief architect rebuilding a young team, the youth and fans are responding.

I, for one, am absolutely vibrating with excitement.  UT is putting together a cohesive offensive with Case in the air and David Ash on the ground.  Whatever it takes.

100 Times at No. 1? Has Michael Jackson Even Done It?

For the 100th time, Oklahoma (OU) sits atop the AP (Associated Press) Poll.  That's impressive regardless of how much you detest this team or how good you look in crimson.  Or is it burgundy?  Or garnet?

At this rate they are likely to reach a high of at least 105, which sounds disturbingly similar to the temperature in Texas for about 100 days running.

This week's game against Florida State University carries great weight for FSU.  Why?  Well, despite the fact they are ranked highly, they've lost a lot of street cred.

Beating OU on Saturday would go a long way in gaining some respect and more national recognition, but I don't see it happening.  Count on OU to put up a V.

Only Seven Miles Separate EMU and UM

3 of 5

A few years ago, I'd have made a snarky comment regarding the outcome of the upcoming Eastern Michigan University game.  The fact they are playing local Big Ten powerhouse the University of Michigan would incite a yawn.

However, in the new UM climate, when I open my mouth for just such a snarky comment, I'm reminded of the debacle on September 1, 2007.

On that day, the season opener in "The Big House," a team that seemed no more qualified to requisition a V than Ann Arbor Pioneer High fought tooth and nail to bring UM to the turf with a 34-32 win.

To be honest, I still take a lot of flack about that day in history.

"So," you might be wondering, "how is the EMU game relevant to Appalachian State?"  Well, there are some interesting undercurrents at work.

The head coach of EMU, Ron English, was a defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at UM for four years before assuming his first head coaching position.

Additionally, Mike Hart, (love, love, love, can't get enough of) Kurt Anderson and Steve Morrison are all EMU assistant coaches and former UM players.  This could get interesting.

I'd like to predict a win here, but I'd sound too much like the ever-arrogant Jim Harbaugh.

What Skin Does Texas Have in the Florida/Tennessee Game?

4 of 5

The Gators have a seven-game winning streak going over the Vols (Volunteers) and this year the underdog might have an edge.  A new coach, Will Muschamp, might be the chink in the armor Tennessee has been looking for.

A former defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the University of Texas, Muschamp is not only standing at the helm of his first head coaching position, but this will be his first SEC (Southeastern Conference) game.

If I could hazard a guess at his expression above it would be, "Wow, it's so much easier being a small fish in a big pond."

If the Vols are going to pull one off, this is as good a chance as any.  However, let's not forget what happened this year between Rice and the University of Texas.  Rice stood their best chance in recent history, but ...

Heisman Already? Uh, Duh

5 of 5

I know what all you girls are thinking: "College football JUST started. Why are we talking about the Heisman already?"  That is a great question.

The answer is because there is always Heisman talk before the season starts, so we might as well be mid-season at this point.

For your information, the undisputed front runner coming into this season was Andrew Luck from Stanford.  However, we are seeing some names that appeared repeatedly last year: Boise State QB Kellen Moore and University of Michigan QB Denard Robinson.

Some early and decidedly impressive play has brought some new names to the table:  Robert Griffin of Baylor has played but one game thus far and what a game it was.

When the Baylor Bears handed TCU (Texas Christian University) a season opening loss, Robert Griffin was thrust into the national spotlight.

Let me tell you, he was as graceful and humble as Roger Federer.  Hell, he might as well have been wearing tennis whites.  Love humility.  So very rare.

Marcus Lattimore of South Carolina is on fire, so pay attention to this dude. You will hear his name repeatedly.

Now, let's run through the Heisman facts you must know.  The Heisman Trophy is awarded yearly to the best college football player of the year.

The first trophy was awarded in 1935 to Jay Berwanger, a running back for Chicago.  A So Very Clever Guy's Girl would know the past five winners and that three of five have been from the SEC.

2010: QB Cam Newton, Auburn

2009: RB Mark Ingram, Alabama

2008: QB Sam Bradford, Oklahoma

2007: QB Tim Tebow, Florida

2006: QB Troy Smith, Ohio State

I'm, of course, all about Denard.  D-Rob, if you will.
