Boise State vs. Toledo: 7 Things We Learned from Tonight's Game

Joe PenkalaSep 16, 2011

After Toledo kept the nation in suspense against Ohio State, many believed that they could give Boise State a run for their money.

While the game remained close early, Toledo repeatedly shot themselves in the foot and Kellen Moore was more than happy to take advantage of each and every mistake.

Here is a look at seven things that we learned from tonight's game between Boise State and Toledo.

The Boise Offense Is More Physical This Year

1 of 7

One key difference from last year to this year is the physicality of the Boise State offense. While the Broncos certainly do not shy away from letting Kellen Moore air out the ball, they have become more physical and are running the ball a lot harder.

Kellen Moore Misses Deep Threats

2 of 7

Last year, Kellen Moore had the luxury of being able to go deep down field to Austin Pettis or Titus Young. Defenses had to be aware of their big play ability which made the entire offense more effective.

This year, Moore is still as good as he has ever been, but defenses are able to be more balanced because of the lack of deep play ability from the wide receiver group.

Toledo Was Not a One Week Wonder

3 of 7

Last week, people saw the Toledo Rockets go into Ohio State and come up 16 yards short of a huge upset. During the game, Toledo beat themselves with penalties that killed drives and gave Ohio State second chances.

Tonight, the Rockets cut down on the penalties but the turnovers and negative plays ended up killing all momentum that the Rockets could build up.

Toledo's Crowd Failed to Be a Factor

4 of 7

With a Friday night game at home and the ESPN cameras rolling, the Toledo Rockets fans had an opportunity to be a real factor in this game but from the first Bronco score and throughout, the crowd never was fully into it.

When underdogs look to pull off the big upsets in games, they often need their crowd to step up and be a factor—but after the turnovers, stalled drives and missed opportunities, the fans never appeared to believe.

Kellen Moore Has Improved from Last Year

5 of 7

While Moore may be missing the deep threats from last year, it has clearly caused him to step up his game in other areas.

Last year, Moore was excellent and one of the top Heisman contenders, and this year, he has come back and really improved on his accuracy.

During tonight's game, Moore put on a clinic and put together a great tape for NFL scouts to look at as he made all the throws.

Terrance Owens Is the Better Quarterback at Toledo

6 of 7

Whenever a team runs a two-quarterback system, it is a delicate balancing act that is hard to manage. Tonight, both Terrance Owens and Austin Dantin saw playing time, but Owens received the majority of the snaps.

Throughout the game, Owens showed the ability to pass the ball down field as well as make plays with his feet. While both quarterbacks bring strengths to the offense, the Rockets need to move forward with Owens as the starting quarterback.

Ohio State Could Be in Trouble in Miami

7 of 7

After watching tonight's game and seeing the way that Kellen Moore cut up the Toledo defense, one thing that became clear is that the Buckeyes could be in trouble when they play Miami on Saturday.

While the Rockets did compete well against the Broncos, they clearly had more success against Ohio State and it should be interesting to see how Ohio State rebounds from last week's game.
