Boise State Nike Pro Combat Uniforms: The Best and Worst of the New Uniforms
Boise State’s Nike Pro Combat uniforms were sensational in their opener against Georgia, as was their play. The Broncos beat the Bulldogs 35-21 and looked good doing it.
Those uniforms were a hit, but Boise’s blue uniforms did not go over so well with their new conference, as the Mountain West will not allow the Bronocs to wear their blue uniforms at home.
There have been many complaints from coaches and the national media about the combination of the blue uniforms with Boise’s blue “Smurf Turf.”
For more details on these uniforms as well as fan reactions, keep reading this slideshow.
Nike’s Official Video
1 of 5Here is Nike’s official video regarding the uniforms. The description reads as such:
“Boise State University's hard-hitting style of play and relentless drive to assert their dominance on the gridiron epitomizes a stubbornness reminiscent of a bucking bronco. Underestimate them. Disrespect them. But do so at your own peril. Opposing teams have learned this lesson...the hard way. The moment a rival team lets their guard down, even for a nanosecond, the Broncos capitalize with explosive speed and unyielding force.
Years of proving their mettle in the wild West has catapulted the Broncos into college football's upper echelon. To celebrate their ascension, Boise State will be one of nine top college programs to sport the innovative Nike Pro Combat system of dress uniforms during their much-anticipated faceoff against SEC powerhouse Georgia on Sept. 3 at the Georgia Dome.”
Helmets
2 of 5These asymmetrical helmets had the bronco you see above but with a completely wide other side. There was another bronco imprinted on the right shoulder to balance it all out.
They combine the simplicity of the white with the flashiness of a single, large bronco and the combination works well.
Jerseys
3 of 5The jerseys feature “fly wire,” which provides “uncompromised support and improved breathability.” The numbers are sleek and the font has a modern twist to it.
The undershirts pictured above have what looks to be a hand bringing down a hammer with a bronco on it. They are made with mesh cooling zones on the back.
The pants are pure white with an orange Nike swoosh and “BRONCOS” written in blue down the side.
Cleats and Gloves
4 of 5When the gloves are put together, they form a blue bronco on an orange background which is one of the more unique looks Nike has come out with for gloves.
The cleats pictured here are as flashy as the gloves with an orange front fading into a blue back.
Fan Reactions
5 of 5Based on all of the positive response from Boise’s fans as well as fans of other schools including Oregon, these uniforms were a great success. They added an extra element to a game that was already great and made up for the “Georgia” on the back of all of the Bulldogs’ uniforms.
My favorite comment is from “TERMINATOR-M” who wrote “If God decided to play football, this is what he would wear.”
