Maryland Terrapins Week 3 Football Uniforms: Love or Hate?

Danny FlynnJun 7, 2018

After coming out and taking the college football world by storm with their state flag-inspired uniforms in Week 1, the Maryland Terrapins have announced that they will now don all-black duds for Saturday afternoon’s home game with West Virginia.

The all-black unis are the latest in a long line of new designs created for the Maryland football team by Under Armour.

The uniforms feature a similar state flag pattern on the helmet to what we saw on Labor Day night, although it’s not nearly as dramatic looking and offensive to those who have been given the gift of sight.

So how do the new uniforms stack up?

Let’s take a look.

Helmet

The helmet is basically all-black with a checkered state flag stripe that runs down the middle.

These helmets are sleek and effective, and they offer up a much more subtle yet appreciative ode to the Maryland state flag than Week 1’s checkered disaster.

Grade: B+

Jersey

The jersey is really the key piece that either makes or break any uniform, and I have to say, Under Armour hit it out of the park with this one.

Sure, there are some out there who won’t love the mix of yellow and red, but personally, I like that it looks like a volcano just erupted from the player’s helmet and spilled hot lava all over his shoulder pads.

These jerseys somehow make Kenny Tate look even more bad ass, and I never thought that was possible.

Grade: A

Pants

Nothing too flashy about the pants—all-black with a yellow Under Armour logo and some yellow and red trim along the sides.

They aren’t eye-catching, but they do a good job of tying the uniform together.

Grade: B

Cleats

You can never go wrong with some basic black cleats.

Under Armour could have maybe added a little more red and yellow in there, but it's not that big of a deal.

Grade: B+

Overall Uniform

Final Grade: A-

Maryland head coach Randy Edsall has said that the all-black look is his favorite, and it’s obvious that Edsall has good taste.

This design is a remarkable improvement over what we saw against Miami.

Yes, those uniforms got everybody talking, but the difference is that these new all-black uniforms will get people talking for the right reasons.

Under Armour has a winner with this design, and even though it probably won’t cause as big of a national stir, it’s still definitely a uniform that the company can be proud to put on display.
