Manchester United vs. Chelsea FC: David De Gea Is Key to Victory for Red Devils
Manchester United and Chelsea collide at Old Trafford on Sunday, September 18th.
However, in the build up to that game, a goalie controversy is brewing slowly in Manchester.
After Anders Lindegaard put together a strong outing in Portugal against Benfica, there are fans who want to see the current No. 2 get more of an opportunity to prove his worth to the club.
David de Gea has struggled on multiple occasions this season, and has really been burned by the media.
After the Champions League match against Benfica, manager Sir Alex Ferguson was asked whether or not he was losing confidence in de Gea.
According to Mark Ogden of the Telegraph, the Manchester United boss said the following:
"'Not at all,' Ferguson said. 'David de Gea will play on Sunday. That’s the understanding we had before the game and it doesn’t change. I don’t know why you ask these questions. You are just looking for stupid little things.'
"
Ferguson isn't buying into the goalkeeper controversy just yet, but if de Gea strings together a couple of poor performances, his job security will certainly be in jeopardy.
He is going to be a key piece in the starting lineup against Chelsea.
If he performs poorly, the Red Devils could find themselves in trouble against the Blues. However, if he plays well, United should cruise to victory.
He needs to play well in the coming months, or he might just find himself on the Tim Howard path out of Old Trafford.
