College Football Predictions Week 3: The Best and Worst You'll See This Weekend

Johnathan CaceSep 14, 2011

The second week of college football was one of the most exciting weekends in recent memory.

There were fantastic finishes in nearly every game, and players had huge games while under the spotlight.

With two games between ranked opponents and a host of other games with upset potential, this weekend has the potential to be just as great.

Here are some of the things you won’t want to miss in Week 3, as well as some things that you do.

Best: Rushing Attacks in Starkville

1 of 6

Mississippi State takes on No. 3 LSU this Thursday night. Both teams have a short week to prepare, and these teams have two of the best rushing games in the conference.

Vick Ballard and Chris Relf lead the Bulldogs' unique rushing attack, with the quarterback Relf getting more carries than any other quarterback in the conference. Michael Ford and Spencer Ware are two talented backs who have taken the holes given to them by their outstanding offensive line and have run away with it.

With a short week, both of these teams could be tired defensively and unprepared, which would mean a lot of points. The crowd in Starkville will also provide a great atmosphere for this game.

Worst: Notre Dame Turnovers

2 of 6

The Irish have turned the ball over an astounding 10 times in two games, which is dead last in the country.

Problems like that don’t get fixed in one week, and Michigan State’s defense will be the best Notre Dame has faced all season.

It’s next to a guarantee that the Irish will make some dumb decisions and turn the ball over to the Spartans.

Best: Wisconsin Running over Northern Illinois

3 of 6

Northern Illinois is a much better football team than you think they are.

That said though, their run-defense is absolutely atrocious, allowing 278 yards per game.

Montee Ball and James White are the best combination of running backs in the entire country, and they run behind a mammoth offensive line that outweighs the Huskies' defensive line by a whopping 64 pounds.

If you’re a fan of defense, don’t watch—but for everyone else, this is a game you won’t want to miss.

Worst: Defense Between Oklahoma State and Tulsa

4 of 6

Again, fans of defense should turn away, because Tulsa and Oklahoma State simply do not play good pass-defense and both are pass-first teams.

Don’t let the Cowboys fool you; Tulsa will be without its amazing receiver, Damaris Johnson, so their offense could be out of whack, but it’s unlikely.

G.J. Kinne fills up the stat sheet in a hurry, but so do Brandon Weeden, Joseph Randle and Justin Blackmon. Expect all of them to have great numbers in a really poor defensive showing with Randle giving the necessary balance and edge for Oklahoma State to win.

Best: Running Backs at Clemson

5 of 6

Sorry if you’re more of a passing guy, but there just are not many games for you this weekend.

Great rushing attacks are everywhere, and there may not be more talent at a single position in one game than Auburn at Clemson.

Both of these Tiger teams have mean running backs. Auburn has Michael Dyer and Onterio McCalebb, while Clemson has Andre Ellington and Mike Bellamy.

These were some of the most highly-touted recruits in the country, and they have continued to prove their worth at the next level. Dyer had his big run against Oregon in the National Championship, while true freshman Bellamy took his first collegiate touch 75 yards for a touchdown.

Worst: The ACC

6 of 6

This week is where the ACC gains national respect or sinks down further into the abyss of irrelevance.

Clemson takes on Auburn, Maryland takes on West Virginia, Miami gets Ohio State and in one of the marquee games of the year, Oklahoma travels to Tallahassee to battle Florida State.

All of these games are great on paper, but the ACC is notorious for losing these marquee games. They have always made these games competitive though, and for the average fan who does not care at all about the conference, these games should be great.

Unfortunately for ACC fans, it will likely be another "why did this happen again" week.
