Chelsea Transfers: 6 Big Names Linked to Blues for January Window

Colin StoneSep 15, 2011

Chelsea made several moves during this summer's recently closed transfer window, but manager André Villas-Boas isn't finished just yet.

The Portuguese boss brought in Raul Meireles on deadline day, as well as Spanish midfielders Juan Manuel Mata and Oriol Romeu and Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku in the weeks prior to August 31, but some targets managed to elude his grasp.

Tottenham Hotspur's want-away midfielder, Luka Modric, never made the short hop across to London to Stamford Bridge, despite a reported £40 million bid from the Blues, and Bayern's Franck Ribery was also ruled out of a move to Chelsea by his superiors

However, Villas-Boas has other big-name players up his sleeve who could potentially make the transfer to Roman Abramovich's side come January.

Miloš Krasić

Juventus' flying winger has long been linked with a move to Chelsea, but nothing has ever come of it.

Serbia's talisman has bags of experience at international level, having competed at the 2010 World Cup, and he is also a fiery competitor who possesses an excellent final ball.

Is Krasic what Villas-Boas is looking for?

Stevan Jovetić

Perhaps if Krasic is not the answer, Stevan Jovetic could be.

Another playmaker lighting up the Serie A, Montenegrin midfielder Jovetic has been one of the bright lights in Fiorentina's squad.

The talented player has incredible close control, brilliant dribbling skills and an eye for a pass, and could fill a void in Chelsea's creative department.

However, the asking price for the Italians' star player may put off any potential suitors.

Kevin De Bruyne

But maybe the creative department is not the problem—does the engine room need shoring up?

Enter Kevin De Bruyne.

Genk's promising youngster has been interesting the Blues for some time, although negotiations apparently broke down in August.

But with Chelsea's midfielders on the wrong side of 30, could De Bruyne become the next Frank Lampard?

Gary Cahill

However, you could just go out and buy a player who is just as good as Terry.

Bolton's prized asset Gary Cahill has been linked with almost every club under the sun in recent months, although touted moves to Arsenal and Tottenham have subsequently broken down.

But rumour has it that due to Gael Kakuta's loan move to the Trotters, Chelsea have first option on Cahill.

Although that may turn out to be false, you can't rule the Blues out of the running for England's towering defender.

Marek Hamšík

Hamsik is a player who has been on the verge of a big-money move for years, but has always decided to stay put.

However, the Napoli midfielder may not stay long if he impresses for his club in this season's Champions League.

Chelsea is a definite possibility for Slovakia's captain.

Neymar

Neymar. The player that everyone is talking about.

Over the past twelve months, the Brazilian wonderkid has been linked with some of the biggest clubs in the world. Real Madrid were purportedly close to sealing a deal for the striker on deadline day.

However, nothing came of the Spanish move and a transfer to England looks very much alive.

With whispers of negotiations happening between Santos and Chelsea, will Neymar be the one to lead the Blues' frontline for years to come?

Conclusion

It's smiles all round at Stamford Bridge at the moment.

Although André Villas-Boas wasn't able to secure every transfer he had hoped to in August, the window reopens for 31 days in a little over three months' time.

But with Chelsea playing well under their Portuguese boss, will Abramovich feel the need to sign anyone anyway?

Only time well tell.
