St. Louis Rams at New York Giants: Why the Rams Can Win on Monday Night Football

Steven GerwelSep 13, 2011

Yes, the St. Louis Rams (0-1) are coming off a disappointing opening day loss to Philadelphia, but it's not quite as embarrassing as losing to Rex Grossman and the Redskins, which the New York Giants (0-1) managed to do during their 2011 debut.

The Rams suffered some key injuries, but it's not as bad as it looks at first sight, with the exception of cornerback Ron Bartell, who is out for the year with a neck injury.

Danny Amendola's dislocated elbow will not require surgery—he is considered week-to-week.

Steven Jackson strained his quad after only two plays against the Eagles, but he claimed on ESPN 101 radio in St. Louis that he could be back in time for Monday night's game against the Giants.

Jason Smith was thought to have a high ankle sprain, but it was actually a low sprain. He'll be good to go.

Cornerback Bradley Fletcher has a sprained toe and is considered day-to-day.

Sam Bradford's finger injury is just a bruise, so he'll be playing as well.

Now that we've got that out of the way, can Bleacher Report please agree that we don't need four articles about Rams injuries as the top articles on the team's page?

Joking.

The Giants, on the other hand, do have some major concerns. Here's their injury report:

Hakeem Nicks could miss Monday night with a bruised knee; Osi Umenyiora will be out with a knee injury; and Justin Tuck is questionable with a neck injury

Also, cornerbacks Terrell Thomas and Prince Amukamara are both out for the season, but that's old news.

Unless Grossman transformed from one of the league's biggest jokes into an elite quarterback overnight, the Giants secondary is in big trouble with the losses of Thomas and Amukamara, as is evident from Grossman passing for two touchdowns and over 300 yards.

One of the primary factors in the Rams' loss to Philadelphia was their inability to get their receivers involved, and during some of the few instances when the receivers were actually open they dropped passes.

It's probably a safe assumption that Corey Webster and Aaron Ross are not on the same level as Nnamdi Asomugha and Asante Samuel, so the Rams receivers should be able to get some separation for a change.

As far as the Rams run game is concerned, it looked pretty good against Philadelphia, as Steven Jackson had over 50 yards and a score on only two carries and Cadillac Williams picked up 91 yards on 19 carries in a relief role.

The Giants run defense will not be as tough as the Eagles, especially with Umenyiora out and Tuck questionable. Although, the Giants have a better set of linebackers than the Eagles.

There should also be improvements with the Rams defense.

Their pass rush against Philadelphia was actually solid. If they were playing any quarterback other than Michael Vick, they would've had at least six sacks. It's probably safe to say that Eli Manning doesn't have Vick's scrambling abilities.

Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL, but spelling out doomsday scenarios after opening day is ridiculous and laughable.

The Rams had a tough loss, but they'll have every opportunity to show up on Monday Night Football and even out their record against the Giants.
