Texas A&M-SEC Expansion: Official or Not, This Ruins College Football Tradition

Randy ChambersJun 2, 2018

Texas A&M joining the SEC isn't official yet, but it's only a matter of time. The Aggies will eventually become members of the best conference in college football, it just may take a little longer than expected.

But once it does become official, it will ruin college football.

The identity of college football in Texas will never be the same. With the Aggies moving to the SEC, they will now be aligned with the South. Texas Tech, Texas and a few other teams will then probably leave to the Pac-12 to create the Pac-16. That would make all of those teams associated with the west coast-Rocky Mountain area.

Teams like Rice and UT-San Antonio would then be the teams to represent the state.

That brings a tear to my eye.

What about the rivalries that have taken place forever? Texas and Texas A&M have played each other every year since 1903. Missouri and Kansas have played each other every season since 1901. Do these just stop as we say "forget about tradition?"

Last time I checked, that's one of the things that made college football so great.

This could also mess up the SEC with new teams being added. It will more than likely cause a change to the East and West divisions, which would put matchups like Alabama-Tennessee, Florida-Georgia and LSU-Alabama in jeopardy.

Let's not even begin to discuss the fact that if the Aggies and the newly discussed team, Missouri, go to the SEC, they'll join the West Division. That would make everything even more complicated, as the SEC would have six teams in one division and eight teams in the other.

There would also be less room for teams to play marquee schools, which would mean more non-conference scheduling. Say goodbye to the bowl season. Matchups like Arizona-Oklahoma State and LSU-Texas A&M won't be must-watch games anymore because they'll be played during the regular season.

College football will still be a great game regardless of what happens, but once the Aggies move to the SEC, it will never be the same.
