College Football Rankings 2011: The Bottom 25

Kevin McGuireSep 13, 2011

We are two weeks in to the season and have already seen some fantastic finishes and performances in the 2011 college football season. Baylor and Robert Griffin III put up a great show against TCU in Week 1, and LSU proved they have what it takes to be a legitimate BCS contender this season with a strong showing against Oregon.

Oklahoma has been on top of the polls through the first couple of weeks, followed by either Alabama or LSU. Stanford is representing the Pac-12 in the top 10, and Nebraska and Wisconsin are meeting the preseason expectations.

And Boise State has picked up another big win on the East Coast to keep them in the championship picture moving forward.

But we all know who the top teams in the country are; what about the other end of the spectrum?

Who have been some of the worst of the worst?

That's what this poll is all about. In the next 25 slides we will take a quick look at the bottom 25 teams in college football, what they have done in the first two weeks and what they have coming up this weekend. Just about all of these teams have failed to get a win, and in some cases, some teams are looking for their first touchdown, or points this season.

25. Boston College Eagles

1 of 25

Boston College has dropped their first two games of the season and have scored just 10 points.

A home loss to Northwestern was close, but the Eagles gave up more than 200 yards on the ground. This past weekend, Boston College traveled to Orlando to play Central Florida and were sent home with a 30-3 loss.

This week Boston College takes on Duke at home, so somebody from the ACC will be picking up their first win of the season.

24. Minnesota Golden Gophers

2 of 25

Minnesota losing to USC in Los Angeles was not necessarily that bad of a loss, but losing at home in Week 2 against New Mexico State is something that is unforgivable for a Big Ten program.

On a brighter note, head coach Jerry Kill will return to Minnesota practice Wednesday after being treated for a seizure on the sideline during last weekend's game.

Minnesota has lost by a combined nine points, so they are showing signs of hanging in their games. The Golden Gophers look for their first win this weekend against Miami (Ohio).

23. Duke Blue Devils

3 of 25

Nobody realistically expected Duke to come out on top of Stanford in Week 2, so we won't kill them too much for losing to Andrew Luck and company, 44-14.

But we can still poke fun at the Blue Devils for losing by two points to FCS Richmond, albeit one of the better FCS programs.

Duke travels to Boston College this weekend in an ACC pillow fight.

22. Indiana Hoosiers

4 of 25

The Hoosiers opened the season by losing to in-state opponent Ball State, fresh off of a 4-8 season.

Indiana may have scored the nation's top quarterback for the Class of 2012, but that means nothing for the team right now. The Hoosiers dropped a Week 2 contest against Virginia.

This week, Indiana hosts FCS South Carolina State.

21. New Mexico Lobos

5 of 25

New Mexico is off to a 0-2 start following a drubbing at the hands of the Arkansas Razorbacks. New Mexico lost in SEC country, 52-3 and has been outscored 66-13 after two games.

The Lobos host Texas Tech this week.

20. UNLV Runnin' Rebels

6 of 25

UNLV has opened up the season with two blowout losses on the road against schools from AQ conferences.

In Week 1, they got a first-hand look at "All Russell Wilson Everything" and Wisconsin, losing 51-17. This past weekend UNLV was dominated by Washington State, 59-7.

This week, UNLV plays their home-opener against Bryant Moniz and Hawaii.

19. Army Black Knights

7 of 25

Army has gone up against some tough competition, but have for the most part been able to hold their own.

Army just can't get over the hump through two weeks. First was a loss on the road against Northern Illinois, then there was a three-point loss at home against San Diego State.

This week Army hosts Northwestern, which could be another tough matchup.

18. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

8 of 25

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly may not be admitting to it, but the pressure is on in South Bend.

Kelly has already changed quarterbacks, lost at home to South Florida and blown a three-touchdown lead by giving up 28 fourth-quarter points to Michigan.

What else could possibly go wrong in just two weeks?

Notre Dame returns home and will need to find a way to get revenge against a solid Michigan State Spartans team this weekend.

17. East Carolina Pirates

9 of 25

East Carolina gets a bit of slack for going up against a pair of top 15 teams in the first two weeks, but 0-2 is still 0-2 in my book.

The Pirates had momentum going against South Carolina, but they let it get away from them in a hurry in Week 1. Last weekend East Carolina did a better job on defense, but fell to Virginia Tech, 17-10.

East Carolina gets a week off before hosting UAB in a Conference USA matchup.

16. UAB Blazers

10 of 25

UAB got off to a later start than most of the country, but it may not have mattered much.

The Blazers were shutout in Gainesville by the Gators, 39-0. UAB is the only school to not have scored a point, although everybody else has played two games by now.

Let's see what happens next for UAB; the Blazers host Tulane this weekend before heading to East Carolina next week.

15. Akron Zips

11 of 25

After two weeks, Akron has put together just one scoring drive, and it was for a field goal. The Zips were shut out by the Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 1 and returned home to be humiliated by MAC East rival Temple, 41-3 (that would be a score differential of 83-3 for those of you keeping score at home).

Akron stays in-state this week with a road game at Cincinnati.

14. Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns

12 of 25

Louisiana-Lafayette was blown away by Oklahoma State, but they did knock off another of the bottom 25 teams this past weekend (Kent State).

The Ragin' Cajuns should put together a winning record this week with a game against FCS Nichols State on the schedule.

13. Miami (Ohio) RedHawks

13 of 25

Miami lost their first (and only) game of the season.

In Week 1, Miami fell short against Missouri and scored six points in the game. Look for the RedHawks to pick up a win this weekend when they play the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

12. Georgia Bulldogs

14 of 25

Mark Richt's hot seat is nearing a boil after two weeks. Georgia has some young talent that needs to mature quickly if the Bulldogs are going to rebound.

The good news is there is plenty of time to get back in people's minds.

The bad news is everybody watched as Boise State outclassed Georgia and as South Carolina toyed with the Bulldogs.

Georgia should get in the win column this weekend when they host FCS Coastal Carolina.

11. Nevada Wolfpack

15 of 25

Nevada was a bit of a surprise a year ago, but after Week 1, they have plenty of room to improve.

Granted, they walked in to a buzz saw in Eugene, Ore., as the Ducks were looking to make up for a season-opening loss against LSU—not the kind of matchup that plays in Nevada's favor after losing some key players from last year's roster.

The Wolfpack looks to even their schedule as they travel to take on San Jose State this weekend. Nevada opens their season with four straight road games.

10. Fresno State Bulldogs

16 of 25

Fresno State lost to Nebraska, letting a close game get away form them later in the game.

To add insult to injury, Terrance Dennis was suspended for one game for his helmet-to-helmet hit in the game.

The good news is Fresno State should survive with the game being against FCS North Dakota State. But North Dakota State has knocked off the FBS before.

Could they do it again?

9. Oregon State Beavers

17 of 25

Oregon State stunk it up in Week 1 by losing to FCS Sacramento State, and they weren't able to pick up the pieces last weekend with a loss at Wisconsin. The Badgers shut out the Beavers 35-0 in the Big Ten-Pac-12 matchup.

My gut tells me this was certainly no Rose Bowl preview.

Oregon State has the week off before hosting UCLA in a Pac-12 game.

8. Colorado Buffaloes

18 of 25

New conference, same story.

Colorado opened up their Pac-12 era by losing at home to California, 36-33, and they were abused by Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz in a 34-17 setback during Week 1.

Colorado takes on in-state rival Colorado State this weekend in Denver.

7. Florida Atlantic Owls

19 of 25

I should be cutting the Owls some slack for going on the road to play Florida and Michigan State to open the season. That schedule is not easy for anybody, but the Owls were only able to score three points, while they gave up 85 points in the first two weeks—that cannot go unpunished.

Florida Atlantic is back on the road to play Auburn, who is riding some magical ride right now. Don't expect much to change for FAU this week.

6. Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks

20 of 25

Don't think that 35-7 win over Grambling is going to fool many people, ULM.

We still saw your performance against Florida State in Week 1.

Next up is a road game at TCU.

5. Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders

21 of 25

First a close loss at Purdue, who is not very good, followed by a blowout loss at Georgia Tech, and the Blue Raiders are feeling pretty blue.

This week, Middle Tennessee is on the road against perennial Sun Belt power, Troy.

4. San Jose State Spartans

22 of 25

It's been a rough start for San Jose State.

Forget about making a statement in your own home state. Stanford roughed up the Spartans 57-3 in Week 1, and UCLA pulled out a 27-17 win against the Spartans.

Next up is a home game against Nevada.

3. Memphis Tigers

23 of 25

Memphis has been outscored 106-17 after two games. Let's move on...

The Tigers will look for a win against FCS Austin Peay this weekend.

2. Kent State Golden Flashes

24 of 25

A road loss to Alabama is forgivable—a home loss to Louisiana-Lafayette is quite a different story.

Kent State is back on the road this week to take on another KSU, Kansas State.

1. North Texas Mean Green

25 of 25

North Texas opened the season blown away by Sun Belt rival Florida International. They followed by losing to in-state foe, Houston.

It's been a rough couple of weeks for North Texas, and it's about to get worse; North Texas travels to Alabama this weekend.
