College Football Rankings: Top 25 AP Poll Reaction

Dan VastaSep 12, 2011

Another week in the books and there are still questions that we are waiting to be answered, but a few early tests have told us a few things about a handful of teams.

In an epic collapse, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish let yet another game slip through their grasps. Michigan starting out at 2-0 may lead to a very successful season in year No. 1 under Brady Hoke.

Alabama quietly rolled Penn State 27-11 thanks to a stingy defense that is arguably the best in the nation.

Ohio State struggled to get past Toledo and Miami comes calling next week, a game which has huge implications for both teams.

Meanwhile, the Auburn Tigers survived yet another thrilling game that came down to the wire against a Mississippi State team that did not seem like they were ready for the limelight.

Also, things are getting a bit hotter in Athens as the Bulldogs of Georgia have lost another tough game. South Carolina has their own struggles offensively, but they have the looks of a frontrunner in the SEC East and a possibly as a dark horse for the BCS National Championship.

Lastly, a huge test awaits for us to dig deep in between the top-ranked Sooners and the fifth-ranked Seminoles.

Who Made the Biggest Tumble?

2 of 5

Penn State could not last in the poll for more than a week after getting handled by Alabama 27-11. The quarterback quandary they have on their hands is not getting any easier for Jay Paterno, although Robert Bolden looks like the guy.

Bolden was just 11 of 29 for 144 yards, and he also threw an interception on top of zero touchdowns. Matt McGloin was 1 of 10 for zero yards, which was a bit surprising since he was expected to have a small impact as opposed to having zero impact.

Alabama was way too good for PSU to have any success running the ball, so it came down to what the receivers could do. Answer: Nothing!

Missouri may have dropped a tough game to Arizona State, but without their starting left tackle or a few running backs this team still fought hard and battled for four quarters.

Mississippi State is barely still ranked as they get a near impossible matchup on Thursday against LSU.

The Bulldogs were not ready out of the gates against Auburn and it cost them dearly. Spotting 14 points to any SEC team on the road is nearly impossible to overcome. Dan Mullen has the team to bounce back, but they will need to upset LSU or else this team may not be ranked for quite some time.

Who Should Be Ranked That Is Not?

3 of 5

The voters must have not watched one of the greatest fourth quarter comebacks in recent history. It should not matter how you come back from a 17-point deficit. Michigan was shut down completely on offense and the Golden Domers had their way all night.

Yet, Denard Robinson found a way to lead this team to victory with a few huge completions down the field in the closing moments. The Irish secondary may have to give a reward out if somebody can find where they went, but the Wolverines look like Big Ten contenders if their offense can be this explosive.

Houston and Central Florida may be in the mediocre Conference USA, but they have both looked awfully impressive through two weeks.

Case Keenum has led a Cougars offense that is averaging 579 yards per game, and they may not be losing any time soon—if at all—this season.

UCF, who trounced a sorry, miserable Boston College team, is lacking some offense. Still, UCF can rock you on defense and tote the rock on the ground offensively. Both of these teams could be on a collision course for the C-USA Championship, and they both could be 12-0.

Who Is Next to Tumble?

4 of 5

Oh boy, where do I begin? This weekend has the makings of being the best of the entire season!

This weekend might be the biggest set of games for the ACC to prove they are not a fraud in nearly a decade. Going 2-7 all-time in the BCS is one thing, but they have been getting blown out in those games. Is the ACC a top three conference?

Clemson hosts a vital game against the heartbreak man himself, Gene Chizik, and his Auburn squad. The battle of the Tigers should be a doozy. Though it is an early kick-off (Noon eastern), the "experts" have listed Clemson has the early favorites.

Ohio State is coming off a close escape over Toledo. Jacory Harris is back and is starting, and he also has his top target in Travis Benjamin back. This game has the makings of coming down to the wire.

How legit is West Virginia? They struggled miserably against Norfolk State in the first half before they took care of business in the second half. Maryland had a nice bye week after their huge victory over Miami. Can Randy Edsall and the Terps take it up a notch and win another prime time game?

Lastly, can Florida State finally become that national title contender by knocking off the top-ranked team in the nation? Landry Jones and Oklahoma have had their struggles on the road (5 of last 7 losses on road).

Florida State more importantly has not been nationally relevant in forever. What better time to shine than on national television against the No. 1 ranked team in America?

Weekend of the Year?

5 of 5

There are a bevy of games to watch this weekend that all have conference, non-conference and BCS implications on the line.

How good of a team is Stanford? They are not getting much talk for being ranked sixth in the country. They struggled mightily against Duke for a half before they turned on the jets, and face the Arizona Wildcats on the back back of their thumping by Oklahoma State.

Arizona wide receiver Juron Criner is expected to be out due to appendectomy surgery. Can Austin Hill fill in admirably once again?

Also, LSU is ranked as the top team in America to some "experts." How can they get up for Mississippi State after knocking off Oregon two weeks ago? More importantly, how can the Bulldogs get up for the Bayou Bengals with two linemen nicked up as they are coming off a tough loss to Auburn?

Arizona State has a tough test in Champagne against the Illini, and the Texas Longhorns have a desperate UCLA Bruins team. Garrett Gilbert is out as the 'Horns have decided to lean towards both David Ash and Case McCoy.

Lastly, Michigan State travels to South Bend as an underdog despite being undefeated and ranked 15th in all the land. The Irish are 0-2 after suffering two grueling losses. What else can go wrong for the Irish? Are the Spartans serious contenders?

There are so many questions, so many games with such little time next Saturday that my head just might explode. Eleven ranked teams will be on the road, which could make this weekend a memorable one that we may never forget for years.
