B/R Exclusive: Two-Time Heisman Winner Archie Griffin on Ohio State Football
I had the chance for the second time in a row to talk to former Ohio State football legend Archie Griffin. Among the topics I had a chance to discuss with him were this season's Heisman Trophy race, which will be featured in the second of these two articles.
This one is focused solely on Griffin's thoughts about Ohio State football.
Among the things I had the chance to ask Archie about were his opinions on Luke Fickell as the head coach for the Buckeyes this season.
"I feel good about Luke Fickell and the fact that he is the head coach at Ohio State," he said. "I think Luke has prepared himself for a head coaching job. It probably came to him a lot quicker than he expected, but he is ready for it."
I also had the chance to ask Griffin about what his opinions on how good the Buckeyes will be this season despite the transgressions that have cost Jim Tressel his job and sent Terrelle Pryor to the Oakland Raiders.
He said mainly that even though the circumstances are unusual, the expectation should still be the same.
"I expect that we will have an outstanding season," Griffin said. "One of the things about Ohio State and the traditions at Ohio State is we've always recruited outstanding athletes who are able to step up when they get the opportunity. I don't expect anything different this year."
One of the things Ohio State will have to contend with of course this season is a deeper Big Ten conference with the addition of Nebraska.
When asked about it, Griffin said he liked the addition of the 'Huskers into the Big Ten beginning this season.
"I like the fact that we've added Nebraska to our league," he said. "I think that Nebraska is a really good fit for the Big Ten. They play smash-mouth football and, you know, they've got a great tradition.
"I expect that this season with the championship game being in December, I think it will be an exciting year for all involved."
