Notre Dame Football Recruiting 2012: Commitments, Targets and Predictions
A few months ago, we did a piece on Notre Dame and their recruiting outlook for 2012. Today, we're going to do a similar, yet updated piece in regards to recent Irish commitments, a couple of top recruiting targets and more.
Also, if you haven't seen it, Irish fans, I did an exclusive interview with 4-star Notre Dame commit Deontay Greenberry last week. It's a great interview and gives some insight into the 4-star WR's thinking about Notre Dame and his recruitment.
Without further wait, here's a general update on some aspects of Notre Dame recruiting right now.
Recent Commit: Jarron Jones, DT
1 of 7Jones was originally committed to Penn State, then started showing interest to Syracuse. Shortly after, he said he was down to a final four of ND, Penn State, Virginia Tech and UNC.
He committed to the Irish in early August and gives them another great DL prospect. At 6'5", 290 pounds, he will play the 5-technique on the ND base 30-front.
Scout.com lists him as a 5-star prospect, and I have him as one of my top 100 players nationally on my board.
Treggs Will Trip
2 of 7Bryce Treggs, a WR and one of the top overall recruits from California, has stated he will take a trip to South Bend for the USC game on October 22nd.
This is a big development, as Treggs is committed to California. However, he said before he pledged to playing in Berkley, Notre Dame was second on his list.
He says he remains pledged to Cal, but wants to make sure he's not missing out on anything at Notre Dame.
Still in It for Peat?
3 of 7Andrus Peat is an elite OT prospect out of Arizona that the Irish are hot after. He's 6'7", 300 pounds and has the skill set to be a complete LT in college.
However, there is steep competition for his services, as he has offers from schools from USC to Florida State to Nebraska to Michigan and more.
However, his high school coach recently told Scout.com that the Irish remain in good standing and contact with Peat and an official visit could be in store after the season.
Prediction: Darby Will Get the Ball
4 of 7Ronald Darby gave Notre Dame a commitment earlier in the process, and some list "Nitro" as a CB while others have him as an ATH.
There is growing speculation by some around the Irish program that Darby could play offense in South Bend. He's an electric RB and return man that can also double as a slot player.
Darby is a playmaker with the ball in his hands, which is why I think an offensive minded coach like Brian Kelly may indeed opt to use him on offense.
Recent Commit: Sheldon Day, DT
5 of 7Day is another elite DT prospect that gave ND his commitment last month. He's 6'2", 280 pounds and could be the next Trevor Laws.
Day has good strength, quickness and is an effective player in the defensive interior. The Irish beat out Michigan, LSU, Michigan State, Iowa and Virginia Tech for his services.
This is another very good pick up for the future of Notre Dame's defensive front.
Keith Marshall
6 of 7Pretty much, the USC game is a huge recruiting weekend for Notre Dame. Not only will Bryce Treggs and a slew of other top notch prospects be visiting South Bend at this time, but also 5-star RB prospect Keith Marshall.
Marshall is a 5'11", 185-pounder with 4.3 speed and offers from Florida, Georgia, USC, Alabama and pretty much every one else.
He has a good amount of interest in ND and wants to make his decision in the next few months.
A great visit would sure go a long way for the Irish.
William Mahone Visiting, Decision Coming Soon
7 of 7William Mahone is another great RB prospect Notre Dame is recruiting pretty hard. He is down to a final four of the Irish, Michigan State, Pitt and Penn State.
He will visit South Bend September 17th vs. Michigan State, and says a decision could come pretty soon after that.
Penn State is another school he's visiting, and Pitt has already seen him on nearly seven unofficial visits.
