Oregon Football: 7 Things We Learned About the Ducks In Week 2

Joe PenkalaSep 11, 2011

With the second week of the season behind us, the Oregon Ducks did a great job of helping both the fans and the players get the bad taste out of their mouth from the LSU game.

In the first game at Autzen Stadium this year, Nevada came to town one year off their programs best season and were handed a 69-20 loss.

With everything that happened on Saturday, here are the seven things we learned about the Ducks.

They Can Still Score a Lot of Points

1 of 7

From their first drive through the last seconds of the game, Oregon put their foot on the gas and never let up.

During the game, the Ducks put up 69 points and also saw Darron Thomas tie a school record with six touchdown passes.

While there still are areas of improvement, Duck fans were happy to see them ring up the scoreboard.

LaMichael James Can Do It All

2 of 7

Last season, LaMichael James was outstanding on the ground as he led the nation in rushing yards.

This season, James committed to improving his overall game in the offseason and is now a threat in the running game, passing game and now kick return game.

During the Nevada game, James scored a rushing, receiving and punt return touchdown.

DeAnthony Thomas Is the Nations Best Freshmen

3 of 7

Despite turning the ball over twice last week, DeAnthony Thomas looked impressive against LSU and continued that trend against Nevada.

In a lopsided victory, Thomas racked up 81 rushing yards, 93 receiving yards and two scores.

Through two weeks, Thomas has been the most explosive and dynamic true freshmen in the nation and only appears to be getting better.

Cliff Harris Is Back

4 of 7

Preseason All-American Cliff Harris was suspended for the LSU game after some questionable decisions in the offseason.

On Saturday morning, Coach Kelly reinstated Harris but he did not end up seeing the field until clean up duty late in the game.

It will be interesting to see when Harris is allowed to start again.

Backup Bryan Bennett Is Really Good

5 of 7

One things fans need to realize is that your team is only as good as your backup quarterback and in Oregon's case, they are in good hands.

The benefit of the lopsided victory was that Oregon could get a glimpse of Bryan Bennett in game conditions and based on what we saw, he is at a good starting point.

The Autzen Crowd Gets Up for Every Game

6 of 7

Despite the fact that they were going up against Nevada, the Oregon crowd turned out and was a force during the game this past week.

You could see that Nevada was having some trouble and by the time they settled in, it was too late.

The Season Is Not Lost

7 of 7

After an opening week loss against LSU, the immediate feeling would be that the season was lost and that the Ducks would not be returning to the title game.

When you put things in perspective, you can see that Oregon has everything to play for.

The Pac-12 title is still in their sight and if things break their way, it is not uncommon for a one loss team to make it to the national championship.

What we do know is that the season is young and Missouri State, Oregon's next opponent, will allow the Ducks more time to iron out the kinks.
