College Football Rankings 2011 Week 3: Auburn Will Continue to Surprise
No Cam Newton? No problem.
From 23, to unranked, and now the No. 19 team in the nation, it is clear these Tigers have their fair share of doubters this season.
The Auburn Tigers have fallen under the radar since the departure of star quarterback Cam Newton, otherwise known as the number one pick to the Carolina Panthers in the 2011 NFL Draft. Yet after two games this season, it is clear these Tigers are yet to lose a step in their play.
The No. 19 ranked Auburn Tigers have posted two convincing wings, topping both Utah State and Mississippi State in Week 1 and Week 2 of the season. In the team's most recent win over Mississippi State, it was apparent that the Tigers were able to play consistent offense, thanks to strong play by junior starting quarterback Barrett Trotter.
Trotter has had some big shoes to fill to say the least, yet despite the doubters, has filled them quite well. In the two wins, he has posted five touchdowns, 407 yards and just one interception. What made the win all the more impressive for Trotter and company was that rival Mississippi State was easily the favorite to win.
Without Newton at quarterback, there has been little to no slippage at the position, which is a good sign for the Tigers heading into the third week of the season.
The Tigers passing defense has looked strong as well, allowing just 198 yards and coming up with an interception in Saturday's win over the Bulldogs.
Heading into Week 3 of the season the Tigers go Clemson. Clemson also boasts a 2-0 start, yet they have played significantly lower quality opponents in Troy and Wofford. There is no question the Tigers have the edge and will come out with a win, as a 3-0 start is vital for a team trying to send a message that they are still big time contenders.
The real test will come in October, with two road games against South Carolina and Arkansas. Will these Tigers continue to win games without Newton running the offense? Can the Tigers defense play consistently enough to give the team a chance?
After a big win over Mississippi State when people least expected it and a 2-0 start, the college football world will likely continue to be surprised with the top-notch play of these Tigers.
