College Football Rankings 2011 Week 2: Overrated Teams Who Desperately Need Wins

Adam WellsJun 3, 2018

When the top 25 polls are released before the season, none of the people that vote on the polls actually has any idea what those teams will look like. Sure, they have an idea, but until you see the teams play a game, you don’t know what they are going to do.

That is why preseason polls are useless. But it does make things more interesting when two weeks into the season, you have two preseason top 25 teams in search of their first win.

While it may sound harsh, these two teams should never have been a part of the top 25 rankings before the season started.

Notre Dame

The name Notre Dame means a lot of things to a lot of different people. To the people who vote for the AP and Coaches’ Polls, it still means enough to get ranked despite the fact that the school has done nothing to justify being one of the 25 best teams in the country.

The latest shining example of what the Irish are capable of came on Saturday night against Michigan. In this game, Notre Dame was leading 24-7 in the fourth quarter and wound up losing the game 35-31.

Notre Dame may be one of the most historic programs in college football, and they have their own television contract. But the days of this school being a top 25 team are gone. It is time that we stop looking at the name on the front of the jersey and realize that the names on the back of the jersey are not very good.

Georgia

When you play in the SEC you are going to get over-praised no matter what you do and how much talent you have. Case in point: Georgia Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs were terrible in 2010, posting a 6-7 record, yet they were rewarded with a top 25 ranking because they were believed to have brought in a good recruiting class and play in the most difficult conference in the country.

Unfortunately, that talent is not living up to its potential, and the cries for Mark Richt’s head are getting louder and louder.

Two terrible defensive performances prove that this team was not ready to be thought of among the very best programs in college football.

If they want to have any hope of competing in the SEC, they should probably go back in time and get A.J. Green to lead the offense and David Pollack because that defense isn’t getting any better any other way.
