College Football Rankings 2011 Week 2: 3 Teams That Should Be in Panic Mode

For the following coaches, it would be prudent to unlock the secret black briefcase, open it to reveal the last possible resort and hit that big red panic button. 

Week 2 in College Football was not an epic swath of upsets. Sure, we had some teams fall, as we always do. But this week was far more cerebral than mere wins and losses.

Some teams have some very real issues that will see them fall not only from the Top 25, but from the pedestal on which we placed them at the beginning of the year.

You never want to get rash with judgements, but the following teams need to get creative before some problems prove cancerous ahead of the meat of the schedule.

1. Georgia

The Georgia Bulldogs have been slowly sliding into oblivion for two seasons. The worst was a loss to UCF in the Liberty Bowl last year.

The Bulldogs have been sized and measured by two Top 25 teams this year, and they have been found wanting. You can now place Mark Richt firmly on the hot seat, and I doubt he will easily get himself off it.

2. Mississippi State

The Bulldogs hoped they could withstand a big team like Auburn with their onslaught of running backs like Vick Ballard. They also hoped they could withstand a team pummeling their maturing defense.

On Saturday, we learned they were hopeless on both counts. Now they must face LSU, a mirror-image of Auburn, only better.  

3. Virginia Tech

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome the only 2-0 team to this list.

The Hokies like their quarterbacks strong and fast. Logan Thomas has drawn comparisons to Cam Newton for his size, arm strength and speed.

The comparisons were not enough to stave off some very troubling issues Thomas had on Saturday against East Carolina, a team that proved able to rattle Thomas into throwing a subpar 8-for-20 on the day.

He will need to be much better if the Hokies plan on breaching the Top 10.
