Toledo vs. Ohio State: Has the Buckeyes' Era of Glory Come to an End?

Andrew KulhaJun 1, 2018

The Toledo Rockets look like they may be in position to pull a major upset against the Ohio State University Buckeyes.

They’ve been on top of the Buckeyes for most of the game, and even though the Buckeyes have regained the lead, the Rockets keep responding.

It may seem like a long shot, but let me tell you, this Toledo team is dialed in.

Every time the Buckeyes have gotten any momentum and started looking like the better team, Toledo makes a huge drive down the field and gets back up on the scoreboard.

This game is still in the balance, but right now it looks like the Rockets have the upper-hand over the Buckeyes.

Right now Ohio State has come back to take the lead, but as long as Toledo keeps responding, they have a good chance to pull off the upset.

Current Score: Beginning of the 4th Quarter

Toledo: 22, Ohio State: 27

What’s Gone Wrong?

Ohio State is just not executing the fundamentals and it’s coming back to haunt them. The Rockets blocked an OSU punt right off the bat that set them up for a touchdown, setting the tone for the game.

The Rockets just look quicker on offense and no matter what the Buckeyes try to dial up they have always had an answer.

OSU has made a few runs to get back in the game, but every time Toledo gets the ball their speed and play calling is giving them a huge advantage over the Buckeye’s defense.

They have the lead right now, but I have to question how safe it is.

What’s At Stake?

Ohio State is currently ranked No. 15 in the polls, but if they lose this game I can guarantee you that they will plummet.

Not only that, but many people doubt whether or not OSU can continue to be a dominant team in the Luke Fickell era, so a loss here would really highlight how far the Buckeyes have fallen in prestige since losing Jim Tressel.

You have to ask yourself this question: Would a Jim Tressel led Ohio State team even be in the position to be upset by Toledo?

Upset Potential: 6

While I have to see it to believe it, I really like the way Toledo’s offense is matching up against the Buckeyes.

Every time OSU scores, Toledo seems to have an answer. If they can keep that up, their chances of an upset increase with every series that goes by.

How Will Voters React?

OSU losing to Toledo would be a massive upset and I can guarantee you that the voters will not look to kindly on that loss.

Like I said, there are many doubts about whether or not Luke Fickell is indeed the man for the job in Columbus and a loss would be a huge knock against this new look program.

Will Ohio State Come Back?

They came back to take the lead late in the third, but now the question is whether or not they can hold that lead. Toledo’s offense is moving with ease against them and the Buckeyes are currently only up by five points.

It looks like OSU is starting to find their legs defensively though, so we’ll see what happens. At the moment I have to give the edge to OSU.

Who Benefits Most From Ohio State’s Collapse?

Two teams that really would benefit from an Ohio State are the Michigan State Spartans and the Wisconsin Badgers. Both teams are going to be in heavy contention for the Big Ten title this year and a big loss from Ohio State would go a long way in paving the road to that title.
