Oregon Ducks, Alabama Crimson Tide and Nebraska Cornhuskers on Upset Alert

Nate HansonSep 9, 2011

College football fans had to wait eight months for the season to arrive. Last week saw the fall of the No. 14 TCU Horned Frogs, the No. 16 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and near losses for the Auburn Tigers and USC Trojans.

What will Week 2 bring us? What teams could be in for an unexpected fight today?

Let's break down the five teams that should be on upset alert today.

Oregon Ducks

1 of 6

With a weak performance against the No. 4 LSU Tigers last week, the Oregon Ducks could be in for trouble today.

Sure, they're playing in the friendly confines of Autzen Stadium, but they will still be without All-American cornerback and returner Cliff Harris.

They will be facing a Nevada Wolfpack team that no longer has Colin Kaepernick and hasn't played a game yet this season. But, coming off a 12-1 season, you can never count the Wolfpack out.

The Ducks better watch out.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

2 of 6

Their 40-7 win over the Chattanooga Mocs last week didn't prove anything for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. This week their challenge is more difficult: the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Last week, Fresno State played at the California Bears and lost 36-21. They can play with the Cornhuskers and, if the team adopts coach Pat Hill's tough attitude, they just might get a very prominent road win.

South Carolina Gamecocks

3 of 6

A tough loss to a very difficult Boise State Broncos team last week is the only reason the South Carolina Gamecocks aren't more scared to go into Athens to face the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Gamecocks should be worried about having given up 37 points to the East Carolina Pirates last week. That is a number that the Bulldogs are more than capable of matching, if not exceeding. When you add in the stiff Georgia defense, this turns into a game that could be much more than South Carolina bargained for.

Mississippi Sate Bulldogs

4 of 6

It's hard to even call this an upset. The Auburn Tigers are the defending national champions and this game is in Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Mississippi State Bulldogs are ranked No. 16 in the nation, but that is a ranking that could be going by the wayside if this game goes the way I think it will.

Sure, the Bulldogs beat up on the Memphis Tigers last week to the tune of 59-14, but Auburn brings a bigger and faster defense. Nick Fairley may be gone, but the Tigers' chances to pull the "upset" are alive and well.

Texas Longhorns

5 of 6

The Texas Longhorns are just recently back in the Top 25 and I'm already calling for their potential demise at the hands of the BYU Cougars today.

Beating the Rice Owls 34-9 last week didn't assure me that Texas is ready to play with the big boys again. I need it to be proven that this isn't the same team that lost 34-12 to a bad UCLA Bruins team last season. Like Auburn over Mississippi State, this wouldn't be much of an upset if the Cougars took down the Longhorns today.

Texas might be better this year, but I'm not sure they'll prove it against the Cougars.

Alabama Crimson Tide

6 of 6

The Alabama Crimson Tide, fresh off a 48-7 win over the Kent State Golden Flashes, now have a bigger task at hand. All they have to do is go into Happy Valley to face the No. 23 Penn State Nittany Lions in a game that is setting up to be very difficult.

Everyone knows how hard it is to play in Beaver Stadium, and this Nittany Lions team is no slouch. Alabama hasn't been tested this year. I'm sorry, but scheduling a patsy like Kent State doesn't exactly make this writer believe you have the moxie to go into Happy Valley and beat up on Penn State.

The Tide better watch out.
