Week 2: Top 5 So Very Clever Topics for So Very Clever Guy's Girls

Hilary LiDestriSep 9, 2011

OK, So Very Clever Guy’s Girls—it is Week 2, and those of us infected by college football are already faced with the reality we are two weeks into the end of this glorious time of year.

There are some really interesting things to discuss, if they come up, and if they don’t, here are some ideas that will make you shine.

The Big Dance at "The Big House"

1 of 6

“Hey, isn’t this the first night game at ‘The Big House?’” you state casually if he mentions the Michigan vs. Notre Dame game.  Fact of the matter is, neither team lit the world on fire last week, and despite Michigan’s victory, neither were expected to.  Both teams are rebuilding and it is likely that process will take years instead of games.  Either way, I am taking Michigan in this game because I’m seeing some protection for D-Rob (yes, I am going to hold steadfastly to this rather pedantic and lazy nickname because “shoelace” or even just “lace” sounds absurd), and when he is protected, he is explosive.  I don’t imagine the Irish D slowing him down.

Sorry Auburn—Welcome to the Club

,this is really obscure and will no doubt put the spotlight squarely on you if you assert—however, a So Very Clever Girl would wonder aloud and allow all of the dudes to hop in and speculate before they grab their iPhones and begin the search for answers you already have. If you want to pull rank at that point, say “I got it …”

The last time a defending National Champion team was knocked out of the AP (Associated Press) poll after week one play was in 1965, when Alabama fell from glory after the first week of ball.  This time it’s Auburn.

What You Got, Alabama?

3 of 6

Alabama vs. Penn State is the only ranked game (the teams are both in the AP Top 25 poll) this week—odd.  There have been some changes in the rankings due to slow starts and disasters—most notably Texas Christian University (TCU).  As you may recall, they ignited bedlam in Waco when they fell to the Baylor Bears in one of the most stunning upsets in TCU history.

The Fall from Grace, What a Difference a Week Can Make

4 of 6

The teams that dropped from the AP this week are Notre Dame, Georgia, Auburn and USC.  It will be interesting to see what happens this week.  Why is this stat relevant for conversation?  Because you can say, “Didn’t Auburn drop off the AP poll this week?  When was the last time a national title team got bumped within a week of play after winning the title?”  The answer is number two above.

Gearing Up for the Heisman Race

5 of 6

OK, it won’t be long before the Heisman race begins, so let me get you up to speed.  The Heisman Trophy is awarded yearly to the best college player in the country.  A variety of factors determine what makes one the “best” and let me be clear—body of play (whole career) means NOTHING to these judges, as well evidenced by Colt McCoy of the University of Texas being denied two years ago.  Criminal.

Also not a factor is scandal, impropriety, and immoral, unethical behavior.  What I find "So Very Curious" is the fact Reggie Bush (former running back for USC, current running back for the Miami Dolphins) was stripped of his Heisman Trophy last year because the NCAA was finally able to prove he had accepted money (gasp) from outside parties.

In the mammoth NCAA rule book, this is wrong. The fact he was denounced the winner and a blank spot will forever be left in the Heisman Trophy annals is shameful.  So … why in the world would the Heisman Trophy committee award Cam Newton, who spent the entirety of last season as the center of a maelstrom of controversy?

It wasn’t just the usual taking money from agents or alumni—this was an actual plan allegedly hatched and implemented by his father, Cecil, to “shop” his son to the highest paying school.  Now, Cecil is still under investigation and the facts have still not made themselves known beyond a shadow of a doubt.  So, Cam sailed into the NFL virtually unscathed.  Be certain, we might find another blight on the stellar records kept by the Heisman Trophy committee.

You'll Hear from Me on Monday for the Week 2 Wrap-Up

6 of 6

OK, that’s all for me today—I have a great deal of fun to have from this moment forward.  I do want to take a word to bless America and the families who lost loved ones 10 years ago this Sunday.  It was a dark day in our country’s history and it is my fondest wish no further destruction will detonate.
