Georgia Football 2011: What Happens If the Bulldogs Do Go 0-2?

Brian JonesSep 8, 2011

Anyone that is a fan of the Bulldogs or follows the SEC knows how big the game against South Carolina is on Saturday. If UGA wins, the loss against Boise State doesn’t hurt as much and the Bulldogs will be right on track to win the SEC East title.

But what if the Bulldogs lose and come out of the game with a 0-2 record?

If Georgia does lose the game on Saturday, it will be a huge letdown and fans will not look forward to the rest of the season.

So does it mean if athletic director Greg McGarity makes a move?

When I say make a move it could mean a number of things.

One of the moves that he could make is letting Mark Richt go.

I’m not sure he would do that only because it’s so early in the season and Bulldogs are not out the race if they lose to the Gamecocks. Plus I’m not sure that would be the best for the program because that would really put the Bulldogs in a downward spiral. Fans will be calling for Richt’s head if they lose to the Gamecocks, but I feel that McGarity wants to see how the rest of the season goes and then he’ll make an decision on Richt.

Another scenario could be McGarity talking to Richt and seeing if he would make some coaching changes, such as letting go of offensive coordinator Mike Bobo or defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.

Bobo has been with the coaching staff since 2001 and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2006. But there has been criticism about his play calling which has led to many fans wanting him to be gone, despite having a long career with the Bulldogs as a coach as well as a player.

Grantham has only been with the team for the year and a game, and while he was a solid DC in the NFL, things have been different Athens.

In the game against Boise, the defense played well in the beginning of the game, but when the Broncos figured out what the Bulldogs were doing on defense, Grantham could never counter. For a guy who’s one of the highest paid assistant coaches in the country, the results are not showing on the field. Another thing about Grantham is out of the six wins the Bulldogs won last year, is there one game where the defense was the reason the Bulldogs won?

This is a big game for the Bulldogs, but it’s not a make-or-break game.

Nobody wants to go 0-2 to start off the season, no matter who it is. If they do lose to the Gamecocks, it will be a hard pill to swallow, but two things are going to happen regardless of the outcome. The first is Richt will still be the coach after Saturday, no ifs, ands or buts. The other thing is the players will keep fighting and will do whatever it takes to get back on the right track.

Let’s all hope the Bulldogs can find a way can get a win in Athens. That would hopefully get this team the confidence they need to fight the rest of the way.
