Virginia Tech, Texas and 5 Overrated College Football Teams

Adam SpencerJun 7, 2018

Every year, several teams go into the season with much higher expectations than they deserve. And, every year, several teams crack the top 25 without doing anything to deserve it.

This year is no different. Teams like Texas find themselves ranked despite only beating Rice.

And teams like Virginia Tech and West Virginia find themselves ranked comically high despite playing in weak conferences.

Let’s take a look at five teams in the AP Top 25 Poll that probably don’t deserve to be there.

5) No. 21 Missouri

1 of 5

The Tigers looked horrible against the Miami (OH) Redhawks.

The offense only managed 17 points under new quarterback James Franklin and looked pretty inconsistent.

The one bright spot was the defense, but the unit lost starters Jacquies Smith and Will Ebner to injury.

So they’ll be at less than full strength on Friday night against Arizona State, a team that just missed cracking the top 25 this week.

4) No. 16 Mississippi State

2 of 5

The Bulldogs are a good team.

But they are no match for Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina and LSU.

For a team with four nearly guaranteed losses on the schedule, a No. 16 ranking is too high. Plus, playing Auburn and Georgia isn’t a cakewalk either.

The Bulldogs are probably a five-loss team in 2011.

3) No. 19 West Virginia

3 of 5

West Virginia is going to put a beat down on Norfolk State this weekend and climb even higher in the rankings.

But when they play LSU in Week 4, they are going to get destroyed.

And they might not even be undefeated by then. Maryland in Week 3 won’t be an easy game for the Mountaineers.

2) No. 24 Texas

4 of 5

Coming off a 5-7 season, Texas manages one win against a team like Rice and now they’re top 25 worthy? I don’t think so.

Sure they are one-sixth of the way to bowl eligibility, but they are actually playing a good team this week in BYU.

I would have liked to see how the Longhorns do this weekend before bumping them up into the top 25.

1) No. 11 Virginia Tech

5 of 5

Virginia Tech’s schedule is an absolute joke.

Their only test of the year will be the ACC Championship game, and that will only be a test if Florida State doesn’t slip up.

Until then the Hokies will continue to undeservedly climb the rankings by beating weak team after weak team.

If they manage the easiest undefeated season in college football history, there’s no way they deserve to be in the BCS National Championship game.
