College Football Week 2 Odds: Betting Advice to Make You Look Like a Pro

Michael DixonJun 7, 2018

After one week of college football, how have things changed?

The expansion of many conferences is leading to an earlier conference season, as many conferences begin their play in week 2.

So, today, we're going to look at some of the tougher games of week 2 and try to decide which way to go.

Mississippi State (-7) over Auburn

If you saw Auburn's game against Utah State, you were probably not too impressed with their defense's ability. The Aggies moved the ball up and down the field all day against the Tigers.

Now, Auburn faces a team that put up 59 points against Memphis. Granted, Mississippi State's defense was a little prone to allowing the big play against Memphis. Auburn's offense is certainly capable of putting up some points. But will they put up enough to at least stay close?

No, I just don't see that happening. Chris Relf at quarterback and Vick Ballard at running back will just be too much for the Auburn defense to handle. Look for Auburn to score some points, but not nearly enough to stay within seven points.

Traditionally, you don't want to go with a seven point favorite, against the spread, on the road against the defending National Champions. But the champions are underdogs for a reason. The Bulldogs should reign supreme here.

Oregon (-27) over Nevada

Normally, I would advise you stay away from games like this. A four touchdown spread is awfully hard to cover. Still, when thinking about betting on the underdog, you have to consider why they're such heavy underdogs.

In this case, that's the logic you need to apply.

Oregon is a good team. LSU was pretty dominant against them. That surprised many people, including me. But now they head home and are playing a team that lost their starting quarterback to the NFL.

The Ducks will also have a tremendous sense of urgency. Any faint National Championship hopes rely on them running the table.

Granted, they don't need to win by 28 or more here to run the table, but I like LaMichael James to have a big game here.

Look for them to get out early with a big lead and at least hold it. Four touchdowns is a lot, but remember that this is an Oregon offense that routinely put up 50 or more points last season. And they are largely intact.

Ball State (+20) over South Florida

Okay, the Bulls will win this game. Actually, South Florida will win this game relatively easily. But 20 points?

Remember that South Florida was more opportunistic against Notre Dame than they were dominant. Make no mistake, they took advantage of the mistakes that the Irish made. But Notre Dame moved the ball and kept South Florida to one offensive touchdown.

I like that team. The Bulls are talented and Ball State's not likely to give the same kind of challenges that Notre Dame did. Still, 20 points seems overkill.

Take Ball State with the points here.
