Manchester United Transfers: 10 Players for Sir Alex Ferguson To Sign in January

Marlon MaloneyJun 7, 2018

Following a successful summer transfer window, the Red Devils left a lot of rumoured deals on the table. Whether or not they decide to pursue all of the players that they had been recently linked to again in January depends on how Manchester United between now and then.

The value of some these players can become invaluable in the future. Here are the 10 players Sir Alex Ferguson is most likely to pursue during the January transfer window.

Wesley Sneijder

Sneijder making a move to Old Trafford was one of the longest running sagas during the summer, but the move never materialized. Manchester United will look to complete the transfer again in January. The Dutch international will be a welcome addition to the club.

Christiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo saw fantastic success in Old Trafford before leaving for Real Madrid, winning three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups as well as the Champions League and Club World Cup. The Portugal international hinted at his desire to make a return to the Premier League in a recent interview with Sky Sports News.

"Why not? I hope so one day, but you never know. The team that I like more in England is Manchester but I cannot say that I am going to play there one day because I am very, very happy in Madrid.

"I've said a few times that, if Madrid want, I can sign for 10 years more until the finish of my career but nobody knows the future. I cannot lie to you and say I will stay here 10 years, that I am not going to come back to Manchester. It is not fair on my part. Let's see what future God has prepared for me."

Thiago Alcantara

Ferguson made a £15 million offer for Barcelona youngster Alcantara during the summer transfer window. The Manchester United boss wants the star of Spain’s European Championship Under-21 side in an outright cash deal—but Barca is reluctant to sell to a Champions League rival.

Barca would like to farm the midfield prodigy out to a Premier League club, but want a buy-back clause, which United will not agree to.

Emilio Izaguirre

The 25-year-old Honduras international was sensational last season after making the move to Celtic Park from Motagua. The Red Devils were rumoured to have been after the back in the summer transfer window.

"I have to confirm it's 100 percent true that Manchester United was following me and was interested in me. It was Alex Ferguson directly who made contact with the Celtic directors," said Izaguirre.

Nicolas Gaitan

The Argentina international joined Benfica from Boca Juniors last summer for €8.4 million. It is believed Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson is a longtime fan of Gaitan and dispatched a scout to check on the Argentine during Benfica's Champions League qualifier against Trabzonspor.

The Scottish tactician will reportedly continue observing Gaitain throughout the season as the winger, who can also play in the center of midfield, aims to help Benfica win the Portuguese league.

Jack Rodwell

6 of 10

According to the Metro, Man U passed up on an opportunity to sign Jack Rodwell in the summer transfer window. The midfielder is not yet one season into a five-year deal with Everton, but should Ferguson change his mind on the former Blue he would be a welcome addition to the club.

At 20-years-old, Rodwell would come at a fairly high price, but his creativity and pace could be something the Red Devils just can't pass up.

Teteh Bangura

7 of 10

Teteh Bangura, 21, is the most prolific striker in Swedish football right now with 15 goals in 17 appearances. The Sierra Leoneon striker could spell the end for Dimitar Berbatov, but Bangura could very well prove to be worth it.

If brought in during the January transfer window, Bangura could be loaned out to gain experience in the English league. The pacy striker, who has previously had a trial with AC Milan, signed a three-year deal with AIK in January and is rated in the £3-4million bracket.

Manuel Neuer

8 of 10

Neuer is considered one of the best goalkeepers in Europe having helped Germany to a third-place finish at the World Cup last year and taking Schalke to the Champions League semifinals for the first time this season.

Even though he was just transferred to Bayern after a bidding war, Ferguson might not give up and come back with an even bigger offer in January.

Marek Hamsik

9 of 10

Marek Hamsik is the name that came up most during the summer transfer window as a Manchester United target if they failed to sign Sneijder. Well both players are still an option and Hamsik is a playmaker with great pace and swift passing ability.

Mario Goetze

10 of 10

Man U made an effort to track Goetze during the last transfer window after ruling it impossible to sign Sneijder. The 19-year-old midfielder would give the Premier League Champions yet another promising prospect.

Depending on how well Goetze plays for the next few months, he could find himself being tracked and signed come January.
