What's at Stake?
Getting off to a quick start in the NFC East is imperative because there will be at least three teams contending for one or two playoff spots. So, as cliché as it sounds, every game is important, especially against a divisional opponent.
The Giants have won the last six meetings between the two teams dating back to 2007. Washington will want to put an end to that run and prove they will be heard from in the playoff race before season's end, just like Rex Grossman predicted.
Giants' Injury Report
Out: LB Jonathan Goff (knee), DL Osi Umenyiora (hip, knee)
Questionable: WR Jerrel Jernigan (wrist), LB Mathias Kiwanuka (groin)
Probable: DL Justin Tuck (neck), K Lawrence Tynes (thigh)
Redskins' Injury Report
Doubtful: DB LaRon Landry (Achilles, hamstring)
Probable: DB Oshiomogho Atogwe (hamstring), TE Chris Cooley (knee)
Fantasy: Start 'Em, Sit 'Em and Sleeper
Start 'Em: WR Hakeem Nicks—Giants
Nicks is one of the top 10 receivers in fantasy football and there's no way you are going to sit him when he's facing DeAngelo Hall. Hall gave up the most yards and touchdowns among all corners last season, which means Nicks should up big numbers in Week 1.
Prediction: eight catches, 115 yards and a touchdown
Sit 'Em: TE Chris Cooley—Redskins
Cooley is still weighed on heavily in fantasy leagues because there is a lack of depth at the tight end position. He has only scored six touchdowns over the past three seasons combined, however, and should be left on your bench on Sunday.
Prediction: four catches, 42 yards
Sleeper: RB Tim Hightower—Redskins
Hightower has garnered a lot of praise from the Washington coaching staff over the past few weeks and appears destined to be a workhorse for the Redskins offense. He had a good season with the Cardinals in 2010 and could be a nice buy-low candidate this season.
Prediction: 20 carries, 90 yards and a touchdown
What They're Saying
Paul Schwartz of the New York Post examines all the injuries the Giants have suffered during training camp and the preseason. Head Coach Tom Coughlin said the team can't feel bad for themselves, though.
"“I’m not going to let myself have that sense. It’s unfortunate the way these guys have gone down, there’s a number of defensive players we were counting on that are not going to be with us, you can’t hide that fact. But still we have what we have and we’re going forward with it.
“We accept the challenge, look at it as another form of adversity and on we go. You do have your moments, I mean, we are human.”
"
The Giants defense will probably take some time to round into form while they work in some new players and eventually reintegrate the injured players. The offense will need to pick up the slack in the mean time.
The Washington Post's Barry Svrluga takes a look at how Head Coach Mike Shanahan has molded the roster around his game plan in his second year at the helm of the Redskins. It's an in-depth piece that will give Redskin fans hope for the season.
""At this point last year, the foundation of the franchise Shanahan took over was in disarray, old and on the decline. Gone, now, are 26 players who started 280 games in 2009 and 2010. Of those released before Saturday’s final cuts, 10 were so close to the ends of their careers that they are not currently on NFL rosters.
"Shanahan has heard all the doubts about the roster he has assembled, and doesn’t much care. The difference between 2010, which yielded a 6-10 record that matched the worst of Shanahan’s 15 full seasons as a head coach and now is simple: These Redskins are Shanahan’s."
"
Shanahan built a pretty nice empire in Denver by building a team around his style, so it will be interesting to see if he can do it in Washington.
Giants Player to Watch: LB Mathias Kiwanuka
With so many losses on the defensive side of the ball, Kiwanuka will be asked to step up and become an impact performer for the Giants defense. He's still questionable because of a nagging groin issue, but should be good to go on Sunday.
Drafted at the end of the first round in 2006, Kiwanuka has run hot and cold during his five seasons in the league. New York will be expecting him to make a smooth transition to linebacker in Perry Fewell's scheme.
Redskins Player to Watch: LB Ryan Kerrigan
The 16th pick in this season's draft, Kerrigan will be making the transition to outside linebacker to play across from Brian Orakpo. The Redskins are hoping that Kerrigan can have as much success as a rookie as Orakpo did two seasons ago.
He's missed some time due to a knee injury, which might slow him down a bit, but he's fully expected to play at this point. While the Purdue product might struggle in coverage until he gets comfortable playing the position at full speed, he's got a ton of potential.
Key Matchup: Will Beatty vs. Brian Orakpo
Eli Manning has been sacked 166 times during his seven-year career, but the Giants offensive line allowed just 16 last season. They will need to have good protection again in 2011 if they want to return to the playoffs.
They get a good test right out of the gate from Orakpo, who has 20 sacks in two seasons. Beatty will be charged with slowing him down and giving Manning time to work in the pocket. He has had a good camp and appears ready to take on the task.
On the Hot Seat: QB Rex Grossman – Redskins
Grossman made some comments at the beginning of training camp that started a media firestorm. The gist of his comments was that Redskins have the ability to contend for the NFC East and shouldn't be overlooked.
He now has a chance to back up his words because he was named the starting quarterback over John Beck. Both guys had surprisingly good preseason outings, but Shanahan decided Grossman gave him a better chance to win games right now.
Prediction: New York Giants 23 Washington Redskins 17
