Texas A&M-SEC Expansion: Super Conferences Will Destroy CFB's Middle Class
With the Texas A&M Aggies expected to join the South Eastern Conference as early as today, college football would be waiting for everything else to fall in place.
Everything else consists of college football creating super conferences.
What's a super conference? It's where all the powerhouses team up and create one giant, ridiculously good conference that would destroy the little guys. A conference on steroids.
Picture Captain Planet, Batman, Superman, Captain America, Spider-Man and a few other superheros all on the same side.
Instead of having the great college football teams sprinkled around the college football landscape, they all team up and create a few super conferences.
How soon will this happen? It's been talked about for a while and college football coaches say it will happen sooner than later.
"I'm not saying I'm in favor or against. I just think that's where it's headed, and I don't see any way around that," Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said. "I also see a playoff system being implemented once those super-conferences are in place."
If that's the case, say goodbye to the middle class of college football.
I'm not talking about the Boise States and the TCU's out there. You won't even hear about them once these conferences are set in place.
Teams like Michigan State, Auburn, Wisconsin, Utah and Oregon. Those teams are pretty good and have solid success in college football. Let these conferences develop and see how much they'll have then.
Look at Oregon State or Utah for example. Both schools have decent success in the Pac-12 right now. You're telling me that if Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma join and create a Pac-16 they'll still be able to compete? Along with USC, Oregon and Arizona that are already there?
"It seems that's the direction the world's going. If it is, so be it," Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops said.
That's real easy for him to say, Oklahoma is one of those powerhouses that will help develop these conferences. There's nothing for him to worry about, he's good. Along with the Alabamas, Floridas and Longhorns of the world.
This would be great for college football fans, who wouldn't want to see great match up after great match up every single week. It would also bring in a ton of money. More money than the ton the NCAA already makes.
But if you're a middle class team or a fan of one, enjoy the last season or two while you're still competitive.
