College Football Rankings 2011: 3 Teams the Voters Overrated in Week 1

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

The first week of college football reinvigorated a dormant passion. It is so easy to forget why we love this sport. This truly is the best part of the year.

Hopes remain high for those still in the top-25. Hell, even Oregon has plenty of time to come back from what looked like the worst idea in scheduling ever. It's probably best not to play a BCS level game in Week 1. Thanks for the entertainment though, Oregon.

Pouring over the newly released rankings, I found that a few teams were still too high for my taste. What would college football be without pouring over every last detail and nitpicking them to death?

The best part of rankings is that they are subjective. There is no correct answer. Well, except mine. The following teams are enjoying a lofty perch when they should be knocked down a few rungs.

That is where I come in. I am here to knock rungs for three special teams that are pretenders to where they currently sit.

You would think that a week that saw a plethora of blowouts at the hands of the top-25 would be safe from criticism. You would be wrong.

Even a victory can highlight some blemishes that some programs wish to be kept secret. These following college football clubs will soon be weighed and measured by more stout opponents. That is when they will be revealed in full.

Keep in mind, I am not stressing that these clubs are not top-25 material, just that they don't deserve their placement as they are currently. Hate mail can be sent to the comments section below.

Boise State Broncos

1 of 3

AP Poll: No. 4

USA Today: No. 5

More Likely: No. 9

I know what you are thinking, "But they completely exonerated themselves from preseason criticism." Did they?

The Georgia Bulldogs are a sorry lot that is coming off a 6-7 season, where they lost to UCF in the Liberty Bowl. Add to that the fact that A.J. Green is gone, and you have a team that had no business in the top-25.

I like Kellen Moore, but I still think the Broncos are too young and small on offense. I like them as a top-10 team just not a top-5 one.

Ohio State Buckeyes

2 of 3

AP Poll: No. 15

USA Today: No. 15

More Likely: No. 18

Again, we are nitpicking, but the Buckeyes don't have the personnel to warrant a top-15 seat at the table. I would much rather include Michigan State or Mississippi State above the sanction-riddled Buckeyes.

The Bulldogs looked spectacular at all areas of the field on an otherwise tough Memphis squad. OSU has the pleasure of playing some stiffs to start the season, but the more stout opponents will soon bring justice to the polls.

South Florida Bulls

3 of 3

AP Poll: No. 22

USA Today: Unranked

More Likely: Unranked

This one actually gets me a little steamed. We all knew that Notre Dame were pretenders going into Week 1. The voters never got the memo, keeping Notre Dame in their hearts as a top-25 team when they considered USF's fate.

South Florida is nowhere near a top-25 team just as Notre Dame was before them. An ugly game that saw the Fightin' Irish play horribly, allowed USF to win a game that was shut down because of weather a couple of times.

The worst part is that we will have this blight on the polls for a couple of weeks as USF plays glorified Pop Warner squads. Thanks for the eye sore.
